Ali Sabet scored 25 points, while
Jared Pearson finished with 21 as the Loras College Duhawks rolled to a 95-77 victory over Simpson College on Monday evening inside the Lillis Athletic & Wellness Center.
Sabet, a fifth-year senior out of Glenview, Ill., hit 5 of his 11 shots from three-point territory en route to knocking down a season-high nine shots from the field. The guard also led the way in assists, dishing out five in 31 minutes of action.
Pearson fell one point short of matching his career-high after shooting a scorching 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) from the field. The junior out of Des Plaines, Ill. knocked down four threes, matching his career best.
Junior forward
Tyler Bass added 14 points and six rebounds, while sophomore
Jack Haynes had 13 points and seven boards – a team-high.
The two programs played a highly contested first half that saw battle back from an early 8-2 deficit. Sabet scored 13 points in the first 20 minutes as Loras led it 45-44 at the break.
The Duhawks blasted things open in the second frame, going on a 33-9 run over the first 10 minutes of action as Pearson led the way with 11 points. The Storm missed 15 of its 19 attempts over that time.
As a team, the Purple and Gold shot 53 percent from the floor and went 15-of-34 (44.1 percent) from beyond the arc to post its 16
th game of the season with double-digit makes from distance.
ABOUT THE DUHAWKS
The Duhawks sit third in the American Rivers Conference with an overall record of 18-3, including a 9-3 A-R-C mark. The team averages a conference-high 87 points per game, which ranks 12
th in the country. Loras has done a lot of its damage this season from beyond the arc, evident by the nation's fourth-highest total of 12.4 made threes per game.
Sabet leads the way with 18 points per game, followed by
Jackson Molstead at 13.3. Bass' seven rebounds per game is a team-high, while Molstead's four assists per game is the third-best mark in the A-R-C. Sabet's conference-high 94.9 percent mark from the free throw line is second-best in the country.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Buena Vista enters Wednesday with an 11-10 overall record, followed by a conference mark of 4-8. The Beavers average 82.8 points per game, which sits second in the conference to Loras. Opponents have averaged 76.9 points per game on 46.5 percent shooting from the floor over BVU.
Senior guard Zane Neubaum averages 19.6 points per contest, which ranks second in the conference. Senior forward Gunnar Reed is a jack-of-all-trades, as he's the team-leader in rebounds with 7.7 per game, assists with 53, steals with 29, and blocks with 15.
