FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Loras College men's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins at the Marian Triangular on Saturday afternoon.
Loras 3, UW-Stevens Point 0
After trading points in the beginning of the set, the Duhawks broke the final tie at 8-8 with a 4-0 run to take the lead. Loras (14-0 overall, 2-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) utilized another four-point run soon after to extend their lead to seven. The Purple and Gold took set one 25-18.
The Duhawks rattled off seven straight points to take an early 11-3 lead in set two. UW-Stevens Point (8-7) cut the lead to just one (20-19), but Loras held on to take the set 25-22.
Neither team held more than a three-point advantage in set three, with both squads having to work hard to earn each point. The Duhawks benefited from a Pointers service error and a block by
Sean Wenzel and
Corey Mayotte to secure the final two points of the set (26-24) to complete the sweep.
Mayotte led the Loras offense with a season-high 22 kills, while
Dorian Fiorenza also tallied double-digit kills, finishing with 11.
Hayden Dal Degan dished out 14 assists, while
Cameron Menini totaled 10 digs. As a team, the Duhawks hit .419, which featured 43 kills and seven errors in 86 attempts.
Leading the way for the Pointers was Zach Meyers who put down 12 kills. Andy Sanchez ended the night with 12 digs, while Josh Brogren handed out 27 assists. As a team, UW-Stevens Point hit .247, finishing with 37 kills and 13 errors in 97 attempts.
Loras 3, Marian 0
Loras (15-0, 2-0) earned its 14
th sweep of the season against Marian University by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23.
Mayotte tallied 19 kills and hit .486 percent to lead the Duhawks offensive attack, while Fiorenza added in 11 kills.
Joe Horn finished with a season-high 45 assists, while
Roman Rothermel and
Tyler Kratochvil totaled two blocks apiece. Loras hit .398 as a team, finishing with 51 kills and 14 errors in 93 attempts.
Derek Wills led the Sabres with 13 kills, while Nick Stasch tallied 29 assists and two service aces. Marian (11-4 overall, 2-1 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) hit .263, which featured 30 kills and nine errors in 80 attempts.
