Softball Concludes 2024 Season Against No. 20 Central

PELLA, Iowa – The Loras College softball team split their season finale doubleheader against No. 20 Central College on Monday afternoon. The Duhawks took game one 3-0, before falling in game two 8-1.

Game One: Loras 3, Central College 0

Loras (20-16 overall, 7-9 American Rivers Conference) led the game off with three consecutive hits by Payton Meier, Morgan Machovec, and Alyssa Hughes. After back-to-back walks, Loras held a 2-0 lead, and forced the Central starter out of the game. Katherine Svigelj delivered the game's final run when she reached on a fielder's choice that platted Hughes.

The Dutch (28-9, 13-3) threatened in the bottom of the third and sixth inning with runners on second and third with two outs, however, Ashlyn Hemm was able to work herself out of both jams to keep Central scoreless and ultimately earn her tenth win of the year. The junior out of Port Byron, Ill. threw her fourth complete game shutout of the year, allowing only one hit, while striking out eight.

Game Two: Loras 1, Central College 8

Loras would score their lone run of the game in the second inning, while Central scored in four different innings, highlighted by a four-run second inning.

Gillian Jones got things started in the second inning by lining a double to left center before Zoë Espiridon would come in to pinch run. Espiridon would later come around to score thanks to a base hit off the bat of Svigelj.
