DUBUQUE, Iowa – Despite a late fourth quarter comeback attempt, the Loras College football team fell to Benedictine University 27-22 Saturday night inside the Rock Bowl.
Leading the Duhawk offense was quarterback
Evan England. England completed 18 passes for a total of 135 yards through the air. On the ground,
Carter Cahill rushed for 67 yards on 24 attempts, which included two touchdowns.
Brock Couch hauled in seven catches for 65 yards, both game-highs, while
Jaheem Haynes tallied five catches for 36 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Michael Carney had a game-high 12 tackles (seven solo) and two tackles for loss, while
Henry Ivers followed closely behind with eight tackles (five solo).
Brandon Glover also recorded three pass breakups for the Loras defense.
Benedictine (2-0) was first on the scoreboard as Blake Shoddie finished off a four-play drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown at the 5:09-minute mark in the first quarter. The Eagles recorded their second touchdown of the game, this time in the air thanks to a three-yard pass caught by Hundley Stallings.
Loras (0-2) was able to get its first points of the game as the Duhawk defense got a tackle in the endzone that resulted in a safety.
Loras began to gain momentum coming out of the halftime break. The Duhawk offense came out firing and scored on their first drive of the second half. Cahill topped off a seven-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run at the 6:40-minute mark.
After a blocked punt by
Jacob Sanchez, Loras regained possession and took advantage, putting six more points on the board thanks to Cahill's second touchdown of the game.
Benedictine got the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter with a 16-yard rush by Shoddie. The Eagle offense used a 13 play, 80-yard drive to take a 27-22 lead with 1:39 remaining.
Garrett Hutchison was able to move the ball down the field and get into Eagle territory before the Benedictine defense came up with a fourth-down stop to give the visitors their second win of the season.
