DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's basketball team secured a decisive 71-57 victory over University of Dubuque Wednesday night at Lillis Court.
In the first quarter the Duhawks came out strong and would go on a 4-0 run with 5:30 remaining in the quarter and would lead by a score of 18-10, leading by as many as nine in the opening quarter and would head into the second with a 21-16 lead.
For the second quarter, The Loras continued to build on their lead, outscoring Dubuque 18-17 to head into halftime with a 39-33 advantage.
The Purple and Gold faced some resistance as Dubuque fought back. The Spartans would briefly take the lead 48-45, off a good three-pointer by Morgan Hawkins and a good jumper from Mia Miller and Isabella Tierny. Fourtunately, the Duhawks regained the lead and maintained their edge 53-48 headed into the final 10 minutes of play.
Loras pulled away decisively in the final period, outscoring Dubuque 18-9. The Duhawks' defense clamped down, forcing turnovers and converting them into points. The largest lead of the night would come in the final quarter with 16 points in route to a dominating 71-57 victory of the rivals.
Daniella Jarrell led the way for Loras (7-10, 4-4) with a career-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and added eight rebounds.
Claire Wagner contributed 17 points and nine boards, while
Silvana Scarsella chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds.
Lexi Beier rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. As a team Loras shot 41.0 (25-61) percent from the floor and 66.7 (12-18) from the free throw line.
Dubuque (7-10, 4-4) was paced by Tierney, who scored 15 points and hit three 3-pointers along with pulling down three rebounds and an assist. Miller added 13 points and five assists to close out the Spartans with double figures. The visitors as a team shot 40.4 (23-57) percent from the field and 55.6 (5-9) percent from the charity stripe.
Up Next: The Duhawks travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to take on the Kohawks of Coe College. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Kohawk Arena.
