CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Loras College women's basketball team suffered a 72-54 loss to the Kohawks of Coe College on Wednesday evening.
In the first quarter, both squads traded baskets with the score being tied up at 10 apiece with 3:16 left to go in the opening quarter. Loras (7-11, 4-5 A-R-C) would then go on a 3-0 run and lead 18-10 going into the second quarter thanks to two three-pointers and a layup by
Lexi Beier.
Coe (15-4, 7-3) responded with a 20-6 run in the second quarter, flipping the game's momentum. Taylor Brunson began to take over offensively, scoring 15 points and leading Coe to a 30-24 halftime lead.
In the second half, both teams traded baskets early on, but Coe maintained control with a 21-18 edge in the third quarter. The Duhawks would try to cut the deficit, but the Kohawks sealed the win with a 21-point fourth quarter, ultimately putting the game out of reach.
Brunson led the way with a game-high 32 points in addition to pulling down four rebounds, while also adding two blocks and a steal. Ellie Wisner and Audrie Helmrichs rounded out the double-digit scorers finishing with 13 and 12 points apiece. Wisner grabbed two rebounds and two assists, while Helmrichs totaled eight rebounds, a block and an assist. The home team shot 55.1 percent (27-of-49) from the floor and were perfect a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.
Leading the way for the Duhawks was
Silvana Scarsella who finished with 20 points while also grabbing six rebounds, dishing out three assists, and a steal.
Claire Wagner and Beier each contributed 12 points on the night. Wagner collected 10 rebounds, two steals and a block, while Beier added two rebounds, a block and a steal. As a team, Loras shot 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the field and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the charity stripe.
