SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Loras College men's basketball team picked up its fourth win of the season Saturday afternoon, grinding out a 68-65 road victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior behind a strong second-half push and key performances from the Duhawks' depth.
Loras (4-1) trailed by as many as 18 in the first half and went into the break down 36-29, but the Duhawks slowly chipped away after halftime. A 39-point second half, fueled by defensive stops and timely shooting, allowed Loras to flip the game late and hand the Yellowjackets (0-6) their sixth loss of the year.
Jack Haynes anchored the comeback with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double, going 7-for-8 at the free throw line and making key plays down the stretch.
Deng Makeer sparked the bench unit with a team-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including three triples, and a pair of steals.
Damyen Jackson and
Gavin Sarvis each added nine points, while
Nolan Berendes posted eight points and eight boards.
Loras' depth played a major role, outscoring the Yellowjackets' bench 30-21 and turning 24 UW-Superior turnovers into 24 points. The Duhawks also dominated second-chance opportunities, grabbing 21 offensive rebounds and finishing with 17 second-chance points.
The Duhawks shot 36.4 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from deep, but held UW-Superior to just 10 made field goals in the second half. Loras also outscored the Yellowjackets 32-26 in the paint and 12-2 in fast-break-points.
