DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Loras College football team lost its seventh game of the season against the Coe College Kohawks, 63-7.
Â
After a crushing loss last week, Loras (2-7 overall, 2-5 A-R-C) looked to bounce back against Coe (7-2, 6-1).
Â
The Duhawk offense was tasked with setting the tone, but on just the first offensive snap of the game, Coe defensive back Leighton Charters picked off a
Jacob Richtman pass. The Kohawks, led by quarterback Brady Kelly, drove 62 yards in only seven plays to put Coe ahead by seven. Quincy Drummer was on the receiving end of a Kelly pass for an eight-yard touchdown.
Â
Loras' second drive started with a two-yard Cahill rush, followed by a 12-yard reception by
Ian Broshous. After a promising start, the Duhawk offense stalled out, forcing
Daniel Giusto to punt the ball away, but a low snap mixed with Giusto's knee being down gave Coe the ball at the Loras nine.
Â
Looking to go up by two scores, Kelly connected with Latrell Taylor for six yards, down to the three. On the very next play,
Cormaic Flynn was able to intercept the pass in the end zone, setting the Duhawks up at their own 20.
Â
Despite keeping the Kohawks at seven, the Duhawks couldn't put together a scoring drive of their own. After two
Myles Schumacher rushes went for only a yard, Richtman saw another pass get intercepted, this time taken all the way for a Kohawk touchdown.
Â
After forcing a Loras punt, Coe only needed three plays to get the ball into the endzone. On both first and second down, Kelly and Devon Kollasch connected on a one and 21-yard reception. At the Loras 30, Kelly aired it out to Jeron Senters for a 30-yard touchdown, putting Coe up by 21.
Â
A few drives later, still down 21, the Duhawks needed a stop to stay in the game. On first-and-10, Kelly and Kollasch connected on a 47-yard pass, setting the Kohawks up at the Loras 17. On the next play, Flynn was able to haul in his second interception of the afternoon, keeping Coe off the scoreboard.
Â
Loras was unable to capitalize on the interception, as a Duhawk fumble resulted in a safety, giving Coe a 23-0 lead. The Kohawks set up shop at their own 37. It only took the Kohawks four plays to get to midfield as the first quarter came to a close. On the first play of the second quarter, Drummer Quincy took it 55 yards to put the Kohawks up by 30.
After a few more drives, and heading into the final drive of the half, the Duhawks were unable to build a drive that surpassed three yards. Starting at their own 13, Richtman was able to find
Sai McWilliams for a gain of seven. Just a few plays later, Cahill moved the chains after a four-yard reception. After a Cahill rush of two yards, Richtman once again found McWilliams, this time, going 64 yards to the Coe nine. On the next play, Richtman scrambled five yards for the Loras touchdown, but an illegal formation penalty nullified that score. After an 11-yard sack, Richman and
Jimmy Peterson connected for five yards, followed by a Broshous one-yard reception, but that would bring the end of the first half.
Â
The Duhawks trailed by 43 going into the break.
Â
It was a stalemate to start the third quarter, as both teams held each other off the scoreboard. On Coe's second drive of the half, they only needed three plays to drive 37 yards to go up by 50, after Kelly threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day, and his first to Taylor.
Â
Late in the third quarter, the Duhawks, down by 63, were looking to get rid of their goose egg.
Jackson Hutcheson was able to take the Coe punt 69 yards to the Kohawks' 11. On first down, Richtman scrambled for a gain of six yards to the Coe five. After a second down gain of four by Cahill, Richtman was sacked for a seven-yard loss. On the next play, Richtman found McWilliams for six yards, getting the Duhawks on the scoreboard.
Â
Neither side was able to put the ball in the end zone throughout the fourth quarter, as the Duhawks would lose to the Kohawks 63-7.
Â
Richtman completed 18-of-32 passes for 154 yards and one touchdown. McWilliams led all Duhawk receivers with five catches for 90 yards and a touchdown.
Henry Ivers' 10 total tackles (six solo) were enough to lead the Duhawks.
