Story Links

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team avenged its loss against the Central College Dutch from Jan. 11 with a 95-88 victory on Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

Central (13-9, 8-5 A-R-C) stayed in front for a majority of the first half, extending its lead to as many as 13 following a layup from Joshua Van Gorp with just over two minutes left to play in the opening half. The Dutch held a 47-37 advantage over the Duhawks at the midway point.

Another layup from Van Gorp four minutes into the second half gave the visitors their largest lead of the contest (14). Over the next nine minutes, Loras (14-7, 8-4) erased the double-digit deficit to knot the score up at 73-73. Gavin Sarvis broke the final tie at 79-79 with a three-pointer to put the Duhawks ahead for the remainder of the contest. The Purple and Gold shot 7-of-9 from the foul line over the last 1:38 to seal the victory.

Tyler Bass led the way for the Duhawks with a career-high 27 points. Sarvis followed closely behind with 25 points, while Dylan Kurt totaled 11 points after coming off the bench and helping ignite the Loras offense. As a team, the Purple and Gold shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the floor and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line.

Van Gorp paced the Dutch, finishing with 40 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks on the night. Owen Schipper and Karson Wehde added in 13 points apiece, while Kaleb Brand dished out 10 assists. Central shot 57.9 percent (33-of-57) from the field and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the charity stripe.
