Box Score 4 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Loras College softball team concluded their trip to Florida winning five of their last six games of THE Spring Games to finish with a 6-4 record.
Game Five: Loras 11, DeSales University 2
After the day off Wednesday, Loras (6-5) returned to the field looking to gain some momentum, and that they did. The Duhawk offense struck early and often, scoring five runs in the first inning, followed by three in the second, and two more in the fourth.
In the opening frame,
Katherine Svigelj scored thanks to an RBI base hit from
Kiya Steger. The following at bat,
Kaili Henning doubled down the left field line to plate Steger and
Dana Skorich, who walked in her at bat.
Morgan Machovec followed that up with a base hit, ultimately allowing Henning to score on an error.
Whitney Leipold ended the inning with an RBI base hit that scored
Emily Monahan and Machovec.
In the second inning. Skorich and
Ava Franklin led off the frame with base hits before scoring on DeSales (2-6) fielding errors.
Keely Pilcher closed out the scoring with an RBI double that brought Henning and Steger across the plate.
Steger got the win in the circle for the Duhawks throwing five innings, giving up eight hits while striking out one.
Game Six: Loras 1, Wheaton College (Mass.) 6
Loras (6-6) got their lone run of the game in the first inning off of a passed ball. Wheaton College (Mass.) (8-2) got a stellar outing from Peyton Blankenheim-Brown. She held the Duhawk lineup to just four hits while giving up the one unearned run. The Lyons scored three times in the third and added three more in the fifth en route to the win.
Game Seven: Loras 2, St. Catherine University 0
With runs hard to come by, Loras (7-6) was able to take advantage of four St. Catherine (7-4) errors to get a run in the second and fourth inning. In the second inning, Steger was able to score on an error before a Monahan base hit scored Machovec to give the Purple and Gold a two-run lead in the fourth.
Two runs is all Svigelj would need. The sophomore put together one of her best outings of her career, throwing a complete game shutout that featured just two hits and four strikeouts and no walks.
Game Eight: Loras 2, Otterbein 1
Runs would continue to be hard to come by with runs being scored in only two innings in this game.
Otterbein (6-4) scored their only run in the top half of the first, while Loras (8-6) waited until the final moments of the game to score their two runs.
After letting Otterbein score on a failed pickoff attempt,
Rachel Peat held the Cardinal offense to just three hits the remainder of the game. Meanwhile, Evie Lehman held the Duhawk offense at bay, allowing just three hits all game until the seventh inning.
In the seventh inning, Henning was able to reach base on an error before advancing to third on a bunt by Machovec, who later stole second. With runners on second and third, Leipold laid down a bunt that caused the Cardinal defense to commit a throwing error, allowing both runners to score to win the game.
Game Nine: Loras 9, SUNY Brockport 1
Another dominate performance on the mound, combined with 11 hits, helped give Loras (9-6) their third straight win in Florida.
Steger had another stellar performance in the circle. The freshman threw a complete game, allowing one run on two hits, to the same batter, and striking out four.
On offense, the bats came alive to the tune of nine runs on 11 hits. RBIs off the bats of Steger, Henning, and Machovec gave the Duhawks a 3-0 lead after the first inning. SUNY Brockport (0-1) scored their lone run in the top of the second, allowing the Purple and Gold to respond with another run in the second frame, followed by another three run third inning. Between the two innings, Franklin, Monahan, and Svigelj all joined the RBI party. Loras would tack on two more runs in the sixth inning en route to their fifth win of THE Spring Games.
Game Ten: Loras 9, New England College 1 F/6
In their final game in Florida, the Duhawks (10-6) exploded for 14 hits while scoring runs in three different innings.
Just like the previous game, Loras put up a three spot in the opening frame, followed by a four run fourth inning, and added two insurance runs in the sixth. Franklin and Monahan contributed two RBIs each, while Skorich, Steger, Henning, Krogman, and Pilcher each added one.
Keeping up with the theme of dominate pitching, Henning delivered another complete game for Loras, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out seven Pilgrim hitters.
Up Next: Loras will return to the diamond on March 22 for a doubleheader against North Park University. Game times from the Holmgren Athletic Complex are scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m.
