LINCOLN, Neb. – The unveiling of a new facility drew an enormous home crowd, and mass excitement from Prairie Wolves' fans. However, the Duhawks looked right passed all the distractions and downed Nebraska Wesleyan in a pair of contests, 12-1 and 22-5.
Game One
The first three innings were relatively uneventful, as Loras (12-5, 2-0 A-R-C) managed five total baserunners, but couldn't manufacture any runs or hits. The top of the fourth changed all of that.
The Purple and Gold burst onto the scene with a solo home run from
Vince Polizzi. Immediately after, four of the next five Duhawk batters managed to reach on singles, and Loras was suddenly up by two. The Duhawks continued to be two-out warriors, as consecutive doubles from
Colin Kissane and
Justin Gutierrez allowed four more runs to come across.
Alex Sandoval put a bow on the inning. With bases loaded, he smacked a bases clearing double into the right-center field gap. All in all, nine runs came across for the Purple and Gold, which tied their season best for one inning.
Austin Sheldon didn't allow a single run to score in his five innings of work, and he was backed by wonderful bullpen performances from
Aiden O'Hara and
Danny Hiemer, who capped off the great team victory over Nebraska Wesleyan (10-3, 0-2), 12-1.
Game Two
This was pure domination from Loras all-around. It began in the top of the first, as
Max McCallum,
Jackson Cullen, and
Cody Sunny would all single, and two of them would be waved around to score.
In the third, the Purple and Gold added on three more runs, as Sunny cranked a triple, and Gutierrez, along with Polizzi would race across the plate.
A grand slam in the bottom of the third pulled the Prairie Wolves within one, and momentum seemed to be shifting in the favor of the home team. How did the Duhawks respond?
Well, a 17-1 run was exactly how they responded. They hit through the order on multiple occasions, and every single starter for Loras got on base a minimum of two times. It was without a doubt the best offensive performance we've seen from the Purple and Gold thus far, and they secured a series win over the Prairie Wolves with a 22-5 victory.
Historic Win
Carl Tebon secured his 600
th, and 601
st wins as head coach of the Loras College baseball team. It's been a phenomenal run for the 29
th year head coach of the Purple and Gold. He boasts a career .521 winning percentage in his 1156 career games, and has brought multiple regular-season championships, along with an NCAA tournament appearance to this program. Along with that, Coach Tebon has now achieved over 275 wins in the American Rivers Conference. Congratulations Coach Tebon!
