LINCOLN, Neb. – The Loras College baseball team fell short of completing a sweep, and were handled by Nebraska Wesleyan in game three, 14-5.
It didn't take long for the Duhawks to get the bats going, as the first batter of the game,
Max McCallum, opened a one run lead with a solo shot over the right field fence.
Nebraska Wesleyan (11-3, 1-2 A-R-C) promptly responded with a four-run onslaught over the next three innings, which the Purple and Gold couldn't seem to answer until the top of the fourth, when
Trevor Segraves hit an RBI single.
The top of the fifth inning saw the Duhawks gain the lead for the second time in the contest, as
Justin Gutierrez hit in a run, and
Vince Polizzi would send a towering fly ball over the right field wall, making the score 5-4.
From then on, it was all Nebraska Wesleyan. They would power in 10 unanswered runs and collect 16 hits, working through five different Duhawk pitchers in the process. Loras (12-6, 2-1) had no response and would lose their first game in Lincoln since 2017.
The Bottom Line
Despite a poor showing Sunday, the Duhawks left Nebraska with a series win under their belt and boasted 39 total runs over the course of their three games. It was an impressive showing for the bats and should only work to build momentum going forward.
On Deck: The Purple and Gold make their season debut at Petrakis Park on Friday, March 28 against Wartburg College. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
