DECORAH, Iowa – For a while, the Duhawks hung around with their foes from up north. But a big fifth inning, and a slow start at the plate led to their demise in the first contest against Luther, 9-3.
Adam Williamson looked solid through his first four innings of work, allowing only one, and four hits, keeping the Purple and Gold right with the Norse. But the fifth inning would tell the tale of the game.
What was a 1-0 deficit ballooned to 8-0 after Luther College (11-18, 7-9 A-R-C) worked station-to-station and collected seven hits to blow the game open.
It wasn't until the top of the seventh that the Duhawks found an answer, thanks to a
Trevor Segraves home run. The Norse responded with a homer of their own in the bottom frame, and Loras once again trailed by eight.
The Purple and Gold had one last gasp in the top of the ninth, when
Jake Zeal and Segraves scored on a hit from
Max McCallum and a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Jackson Cullen. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late for the Duhawks who would drop game one of their series with the Norse.
See(graves) You Later, Ball!
Senior second baseman
Trevor Segraves recorded his second homerun of the season, and officially his second homerun ever to get the Purple and Gold on the board.
On Deck: The Duhawks travel to River Forest, Illinois for their final non-conference contest against the Dominican University Stars on Thursday, April 17. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
