ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Loras College women's tennis team came up short in a competitive match against Augustana College on Friday afternoon.
In doubles play, the duo of
Mary Breitbach and
Dorothy Deans fell 6-3 to Colleen Larry and Hannah Colbert at the No. 1 position. At No. 2,
Ellie Kalina and
Leia Papanicholas were outlasted 6-4 by Natasha Gauerke and Maripaz Ramirez. The Duhawks picked up their lone doubles win at No. 3, where
Alexis Tatum and
Caroline Hutchinson defeated Hattie Timerman and Maddy Harned, 6-1. Loras trailed 1-0 heading into singles action.
Breitbach put Loras on the board in singles with a three-set victory over Colbert at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Deans fell to Ramirez at No. 2, 6-3, 7-5, while Papanicholas dropped a tight match to Larry, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3), at No. 3. Hutchinson battled to a win at No. 4, topping Gauerke 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2). At No. 5, Kalina was defeated by Harned, 6-3, 6-2. Tatum secured the final singles win for the Duhawks, taking down Timerman at No. 6, 6-3, 6-4.
