LISLE, Ill. - The Loras College football team fell short in its first road trip of the year against Benedictine University, 20-13.
Â
The Eagles held an early 13-point lead, but the Duhawks were able to chip away and cut the lead down to seven at halftime after a seven-play, 60-yard drive that ended with a
Sai McWilliams 15-yard touchdown reception from
Joey Helminiak.
Â
Loras (0-2) was unable to bring the momentum they created late in the first half out of the halftime break. The Duhawks started the second half with a three-play drive, resulting in a punt. The offensive woes continued until Will Philips delivered a 12-yard strike to
Ian Broshous, resulting in a Duhawk touchdown.
Â
On the other end, Benedictine (2-0) would find paydirt on its first drive of the half, but the Loras defense was able to regroup and force the home team offense off the field when needed. During their last drive of the game, the Eagles were able to drive 54 yards downfield to try and ice the game, but had their field goal attempt blocked by the Duhawks.
Â
With one second left on the clock and the ball at their own 47, Philips was sacked, but a horse-collar flag against the Eagles gave the Duhawks one last chance. Loras' comeback attempt fell just short for on the last snap of the game, Philips' pass was incomplete.
Â
Helminiak and Philips combined for 231 yards and two touchdowns in the air, with Broshous accounting for 84 yards and one touchdown.
Will Speltz led the Duhawks defensively with 11 tackles and one sack.
Â
Up Next: The Duhawks will continue their time on the road as they travel across town to take on the Spartans of the University of Dubuque on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
