Duhawks Soar Past Spartans, 71-54

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Behind a fourth straight double-double from Claire Wagner and three other double-digit scorers, the Loras College women's basketball team took down the University of Dubuque, 71-54, on Wednesday night.

Mila Van Weelden gave Loras (7-12 overall, 3-7 American Rivers Conference) a much-needed lift off the bench in the first quarter. The sophomore scored seven points in the first frame including a couple a key offensive rebounds to give the Duhawks an 11-point lead after one.

Loras kept momentum rolling in the second quarter, knocking down 3-of-5 three pointers to outscore the Spartans (4-14, 2-7) by seven in the quarter. Kylie Rigby, Van Wellden, and Lexi Beier all connected from deep in the second to give the Purple and Gold a 35-17 halftime lead.

Kiah Davis came out of the locker room strong, scoring the first five Loras points of the second half. However, Dubuque responded and went on the win the quarter 23-19 thanks to 8-of-13 shooting from the floor.

Loras took a 14-point lead into the final quarter and led by as many as 25 at one point to split the season series with their crosstown rival.  

Wagner paced the Duhawks with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds. Davis followed with 12 points, while Van Weelden also added 12 points off the bench. Rigby rounded out double-digit scorers with 10 points. As a team, Loras made a season-high 17 free throws, going 17-of-20 from the line while also shooting 46.2 percent from three (6-of-13).

UD was led by Christina Simonetti who had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Spartans. Lilly Craig added 13 and Avery Green posted 11 points in the loss.

Up Next: Loras travels to Waverly, Iowa to take on Wartburg College. Tip-off from Levick Arena is set for 2 p.m.
