GREENVILLE, Ill.- The Duhawks couldn't get the job done versus the Panthers, dropping the final two games of the series, 10-9 and 16-4.
GAME TWO
Scoring was at a premium to begin the game, with Vinny Costantino holding off the Greenville (4-5, 0-0 SLIAC) offense until the Duhawk bats could break through, and they did so in quick succession.
In the fourth, with the score 1-0, Loras (3-3, 0-0 A-R-C) cracked the score column thanks to a
Jackson Cullen solo shot to left-center. Later in the same inning
Vince Polizzi doubled to left plating another.
The Purple and Gold added more with
Ryan Quinlan and
Jake Zeal collecting a combined three RBI, setting the score at 5-1 Duhawks.
A big sixth inning for the Panthers forced a pitching change, but Loras' arms worked out of the jam and subsequently
Colin Kissane whacked his fourth home run of the young season.
The eighth would prove to be the downfall for the Purple and Gold though, as Greenville would race across six runs and suddenly, the home team had a three-run lead headed into the ninth.
The Duhawks clawed back, and a two-out rally put a ton of pressure on the Panthers. After scoring a pair, Loras had bases loaded with two outs and Cullen at the dish. The tying run stood 90 feet away, but unfortunately a ground out to second would seal their fate, and the Duhawks would fall 10-9.
GAME THREE
The rubber match was all Greenville from the first pitch.
Loras scored in the first but immediately gave up four runs in the bottom frame and spiraled from there.
The Panthers would work 16 runs in, with the Duhawk pitching having few answers for the onslaught from Greenville's bats
.
Polizzi was able to snag a couple RBI, along with
Liam Sullivan hitting a shot off the left field wall, but the Purple and Gold ran out of steam and dropped the series.
On Deck: Loras has a scrimmage versus the University of Iowa on Tuesday, March 3. First pitch is set for 4:05 p.m.
