CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team was defeated by the Kohawks of Coe College in a closely contested conference matchup on Saturday afternoon by a score of 78-74.
The Duhawks were led by
Gavin Sarvis with 17 points, five assists, and two blocks.
Jack Haynes also contributed 16 points on 53.8 percent (7-of-13) shooting as well as
Nolan Berendes and
Damyen Jackson who pitched in 15 and 14 points respectively.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team being able to jump out to a lead. A pair of Berendes deep balls kept the score close in the beginning of the first half. Loras (16-6 overall, 10-3 A-R-C) was able to build a lead after a Jackson three-pointer and a free throw from Sarvis gave the Duhawks a six-point advantage (28-22). The Kohawks (15-7, 7-6) kept it close for the remainder of the first half, but were unable to reclaim the lead. Loras led 40-36 heading into the halftime break.
Jackson got the scoring started for the Purple and Gold to begin the second half with a layup on an assist from Sarvis. The Duhawks continued to build their lead throughout the beginning of the second half, extending the lead to eight (50-42). The Kohawks never let up and fought their way back into the game, taking their first lead of the second half, 62-60, with 7:20 left to play. Coe maintained this lead despite hard-fought efforts from Loras and the Kohawks walked away victorious, 78-74.
