Duhawks Handle Pointers in Straight Sets

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team closed out its nonconference schedule with a 3-0 sweep over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Wednesday evening inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

After some back-and-forth play to start the opening set, Loras (15-4, 1-3 CCIW) strung together back-to-back four-point runs to hold an 18-12 lead. The Duhawks took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 set one win.

 The Purple and Gold led the entirety of the second set, extending their advantage to as many as nine (24-15) following a 6-0 run late in the set. A kill from Elijah Passey sealed the 25-16 set two win for the Duhawks.  

The Duhawks broke the final tie at 14-14 in the third set with a 4-0 run that featured blocks from Bo Brainerd III and Passey. Loras rattled off the last five points of the set to secure the sweep with a 25-17 set three win.

Roman Rothermel led the way for the Duhawks with 11 kills. Anthony Schwarz and Brainerd III followed closely behind with nine kills apiece, while Evan Dziadkowiec handed out 33 assists on the night. As a team, Loras hit .500, totaling 40 kills and three errors in 74 attempts.

Hudson Dresen paced the UW-Stevens Point (10-11) offense with a match-high 12 kills, while Ben Feld and Sam Jolin dished out 13 assists each. As a team, the Pointers hit .118, which included 30 kills and 20 errors in 85 attempts.   

Up Next: The Purple and Gold travel to Rock Island, Ill. on Wednesday, March 18 to take on the Augustana College Vikings. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Roy J. Carver Center.
