MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Loras College softball team capped off a four-game weekend, winning two games at Cornell College on Sunday afternoon. Loras took game one 7-1, before winning game two of the double header 7-3.
Game One: Loras 7, Cornell College 1
The Duhawks (14-3) did the majority of their work in the opening innings.
In the first, Loras (14-3) got a two-run double off the bat of
Kiya Steger to score
Kaili Henning and
Ava Franklin. Later in the inning,
Gillian Jones delivered a base hit to bring Steger around to score.
In the following inning, the Purple and Gold put up another three spot to take a commanding lead. Henning put the first run of the frame on the board with an RBI double that scored
Katherine Svigelj. Steger came through with her third RBI of the game with a base hit to center field to plate Henning.
Henning provided an insurance run in the top of the sixth with another RBI double that plated Franklin.
Henning earned back-to-back wins, throwing a complete game highlighted by six strikeouts and only one earned run.
Game Two; Lorass 7, Cornell College 3
It took the Duhawks (15-3) until the third inning to get the bats going, but once they did, the Duhawk offense put up a five-run inning.
Loras was able to get the bases loaded early after
Keely Pilcher drew a lead off walk before advancing to second on a bunt single from
Ellie Baker, followed by a base hit from Svigelj. That set the table for a bases clearing double from Franklin to take a 3-2 lead after Brianna Risley homered for Cornell in the previous inning. Franklin later scored thanks to an RBI double from Franklin and
Alyson Krogman ended the five-run innings with a RBI double of her own.
Steger and Svigelj provided the final runs of the game for the Purple and Gold. Steger blasted her second home run of the season in the fifth, and Svigelj hit a SAC fly that scored Baker in the sixth.
Steger kept her undefeated season alive in the circle with her fifth win of the season. She threw all seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while fanning three.
Up Next: Loras will continue their run of road games and will travel to Stevens Point, Wis. on March 28 to take on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
