MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Loras College softball team picked up two road wins over the Monmouth College Scots on Saturday afternoon. The Duhawks took game one of the double header 8-2, before completing the sweep with a 6-2 win in game two.
Game One: Loras 8, Monmouth College 2
In game one, Loras (12-3) got their offense going early, scoring four of their eight runs in the first two innings.
Dana Skorich got the scoring started with an RBI double that scored
Ava Franklin, who reached on a Scot (3-10) error. The following at-bat,
Kiya Steger blasted a two-run home run to give the Duhawks an early 3-0 lead.
Ellie Baker gave the Purple and Gold a 4-0 lead after her RBI base hit that plated
Gillian Jones, who singled to lead off the inning. In the fourth inning,
Bailey Welu hit a SAC fly to center to score
Laurissa Klapatauskas, who pinch ran for
Abigail Cortez after her lead off base hit.
Loras would plate two more in the sixth, followed by one in the seventh en route to its game one victory.
In the circle,
Kaili Henning was credited with her second win of the season after throwing four strong innings. The sophomore allowed one run on four hits while striking out six.
Game Two: Loras 6, Monmouth College 2
Much like game one, Loras (13-3) got four runs in the first two frames to take an early lead.
Henning got the Duhawks on the board first with her RBI base hit that brought
Katherine Svigelj home after her lead off single. In the second, it was Henning with another RBI, this time after a bases clearing double that plated Franklin and Baker. Henning later scored thanks to an RBI double off the bat of Skorich.
Franklin and Jones were responsible for the final two Duhawk runs. Franklin got an RBI bunt single in the fourth, before Jones added an insurance run in the fifth with her SAC fly.
Rachel Peat got her fourth win of the season for Loras. She threw six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Up Next: Loras will travel to Mount Vernon, Iowa on Sunday, March 22 to take on Cornell College. First pitch of the double header is scheduled for 1 p.m.
