STORM LAKE, Iowa – The Duhawks accomplished something that hadn't been done since 2018; and that was a series sweep of the Beavers, thanks to 14-12 and 4-2 wins Saturday afternoon.
Game Two
This barn burner saw both teams combined for 26 runs and 35 hits over twelve innings of high-octane action.
Loras (10-9, 4-2 A-R-C) picked up right where they left off in the first, with
Colin Kissane and Isiah Rose knocking in a pair of runs on a double and a single.
Then in the second and third innings, the Purple and Gold would add three more with a double from
Jackson Cullen and back-to-back jacks to left field from Rose and
Ben Shea to create a 6-1 advantage for the visitors.
Despite this hot start, Buena Vista University (5-15, 1-5 A-R-C) refused to go away, and manufactured as much offense as they could against the pitching combination of
Vincent Costantino and
Aiden O'Hara.
Aside from the first inning, both teams scored every time up until the seventh, and this is where the dynamic completely flipped.
After home runs from
Alex Sandoval and
Vince Polizzi, the Beavers sent in their flamethrowing reliever Koleson Evans. And he shut down the Duhawk offense, so much so that Loras only managed one hit from the time he entered up until the waning moments of his outing five innings later.
As suspected, the Purple and Gold went with their big guns and turned to
Dylan Ackermann to keep the score deadlocked. The fifth year lefty had a performance that wouldn't soon be forgotten.
As the two squads went into extra-innings, Ackermann was able to stave off the Beavers long enough to allow Kissane to dispatch a two-run bomb to left in the twelfth.
Then in the bottom frame, Loras secured victory, and the first series win for the Purple and Gold against Buena Vista since 2022.
Game Three
This was an extremely fast-moving affair, with the two pitchers trading haymakers.
Carson Hammer worked tirelessly in his first career start and went the distance, in what was ultimately a seven-inning game due to league rules about extra-inning contests.
Loras scored four runs, three of them on homers from Liam Sullivan, Kissane, and Polizzi.
That was more than enough for Hammer, as he gave up six hits, all of which were spread around, while striking out six Beavers.
The celebration was on in Storm Lake, as the Duhawks swept Buena Vista and got over the .500 mark, with a record of 10-9.
On Deck: Loras hits the diamond on Tuesday, March 31 with a doubleheader against Luther College. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Petrakis Park.
