PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The Loras College softball team split its doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Tuesday afternoon. The Purple and Gold took a commanding 11-0 victory in the first game before falling 4-0 in the second game.
Game One: Loras 11, UW-Platteville 0
In the first game, Loras dazzled offensively, racking up 13 hits and 10 RBIs, while their pitching staff stifled the opposition, allowing just two hits over five innings.
The Duhawks set the tone early with a four-run first inning.
Katherine Svigelj singled to lead off the game, and a Platteville error put
Ava Franklin on base.
Kaili Henning's single brought in Svigelj, and
Dana Skorich's double scored Franklin. Henning crossed home after an error, and
Gillian Jones grounded out to drive in Skorich. By the end of the first inning, the Duhawks led 4-0.
Loras extended their lead in the second inning. Svigelj singled, Franklin reached on a fielder's choice, and Henning's double put runners in scoring position. Franklin scored on a groundout by Skorich, pushing the score to 5-0.
The Duhawks broke the game wide open in the third, plating six runs in the frame.
Alyson Krogman walked to lead off the inning,
Laurissa Klapatauskas doubled, and
Ellie Baker singled, setting the stage for Svigelj's bases-clearing triple. Franklin added an RBI single, and
Kiya Steger's double drove in two more.
The fourth inning saw the Duhawks collect two hits but not score, maintaining the 11-0 lead. The fifth inning was scoreless for both teams, sealing an emphatic win for Loras.
Henning dominated on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout over five innings, surrendering just two hits, no walks, and fanning five batters.
Game Two: Loras 0, UW-Platteville 4
In the second game, Loras struggled to capitalize despite managing six hits, while Platteville's pitching shined with eight strikeouts over seven innings.
Platteville opened the scoring when Mia Savage scored on an RBI double by Rylee Broshous, putting UWP ahead 1-0.
The fifth inning proved pivotal for the Pioneers. Greta Volkening reached on a bunt single to lead off the inning, followed by Delila Liston's single that advanced Volkening to third. Allison Peters then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Volkening. Melissa Dietz extended the lead with a two-run homer, bringing the score to 4-0.
Loras had its chances but left runners on base in several innings and was unable to come up with a key hit.
Up Next: Loras will face Wartburg College on Tuesday, April 7, at Faber-Clark Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
