CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – It was a tail of two different games Monday afternoon for the Loras College softball team. The Duhawks dominated game one, before struggling offensively in game two, to split their doubleheader against Coe College.
Game One: Loras 8, Coe College 0
Dana Skorich got Loras (21-8 Overall, 4-3 A-R-C) on the board in the opening frame after her RBI double to left center that scored
Kaili Henning, who reached base with a single up the middle. The following at-bat,
Kiya Steger blasted a two-run homer to give the Duhawks a 3-0 lead after one.
In the third, the Duhawks were able to plate four, and blow the game open.
Ava Franklin walked to leadoff the inning before advancing to third on a double from Henning. After Steger walked,
Laurissa Klapatauskas singled to bring home Franklin, followed by Henning, who scored on a Kohawk (16-11, 1-4) error. The next at-bat
Gillian Jones put a ball in play to score Steger, before a delayed steal from Jones allowed Klapatauskas to score the seventh run of the game for the Purple and Gold.
Franklin gave Loras their final run with her bunt single that scored
Ellie Baker, who was hit by a pitch to leadoff the top of the fourth.
Fresh off a A-R-C Pitcher of the Week award, Henning once again dominated in the circle. The sophomore gave up one hit in five innings of work, while fanning eight for her seventh win of the year.
Game Two: Loras 0, Coe College 7
In game two of the doubleheader, the Kohawks (17-11, 2-4) returned the favor, and shut out the Duhawks (21-9, 4-4).
Coe was on the board first after getting an RBI single from Marisa Vodicka, and then a passed ball to make it 2-0.
Loras left eight runners on base through the first six innings, before the home team opened the game up in the bottom half of the sixth. The Kohawks platted four runs in the inning that included two RBI walks, and a two RBI double to give themselves a 7-0 lead.
Up Next: Loras will return to action on April 18 when they welcome Simpson College to Faber-Clark Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
