DUBUQUE, Iowa – History repeated itself on Saturday afternoon at Faber-Clark Field as the Loras College softball team swept the No. 23rd-ranked Dutch of Central College on senior day for the second straight year.
Game One: Loras 3, Central College 0
Offense was hard to come by for both teams to start game one as both teams combined for just one hit through the first four and a half innings.
Kiya Steger put the Duhawks on the board with her solo homerun to right center. She then contributed two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with her two-out base hit to left field that scored
Ellie Baker and
Ava Franklin.
Kaili Henning once again put on a show in the circle to Loras. The sophomore tossed a two-hit shutout that featured five strikeouts for her ninth win of the season.
Game Two: Loras 4, Central College 2
After a poor offensive performance in game one, the Central bats got to work early in game two. Hannah Higgins doubled to left center for the games first run after Rylee Dunkin scored after reaching base to leadoff the game.
Loras responded the following half inning with four runs of their own.
Dana Skorich put the Duhawks on the board with her RBI single that scored Franklin, who singled. The following at-bat,
Gillian Jones drove in a run with a base hit before
Ashli Bossom's pinch-hit RBI single that scored two runs.
The four runs is all
Rachel Peat needed. The senior celebrated senior day throwing five innings, allowing two runs on five hits to move to 5-0 on the year. Hennin earned the rare six-out save after not allowing a hit the last two innings to secure the sweep over the Dutch.
Up Next: The Duhawks will return to action on May 1 to take on Buena Vista University. First pitch from BVU Softball Field is scheduled for 3 p.m.
