DUBUQUE, Iowa - Loras had it within arms reach for a majority of the game, but an implosion in the sixth inning solidified a 13-5 loss Thursday night.
Â
Through three and a half innings it was all Coe (25-12, 15-7 A-R-C), who had a 3-0 advantage over the home team. However, that would change with a little Loras (18-17, 12-10 A-R-C) effort. It began at the bottom of the fourth, as
Alex Sandoval hit a groundball to third forcing an error and scoring a run. Then in the fifth the Purple and Gold also hit paydirt with a
Cody Sunny single to right, plating
Jackson Cullen.
Â
Just passed the halfway point in the game and the Duhawks found themselves in a one run ball game. However, this would prove to be short-lived, as a six spot demolished all momentum that was built prior and led to a quick downward spiral.
Â
Loras wouldn't scratch the scoreboard again until the ninth, where they managed a three spot.
Jack Carney had an RBI single to right and
Vince Polizzi had a two-run shot to right center. That homer marked the team's 44th of the season, which broke the single season team home run record, one that had stood for 28 years.
Â
Despite engraving themselves into the history books, the Purple and Gold would fall in game one, and unfortunately lose their hopes at a two seed in the American Rivers Conference tournament.
Â
On Deck: The Duhawks can find themselves anywhere between a three seed and a six seed in the A-R-C tournament, and that will mostly be dictated by their performance in the remaining two games against the Kohawks. First pitch of the doubleheader at Petrakis is set for 3:30 p.m.
