Loras College Athletics

It takes a special type of student-athlete to compete in two separate sports, let alone excel at both to the point of significant success. Brian Kult ('90) did just that while representing the Duhawks in both football and track and field. The Green Bay, Wis. native was a three-time All-Iowa Conference linebacker, totaling 417 tackles (190 solo), 13 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and four interceptions. Beyond his conference accomplishments, Kult was named a Pizza Hut All-American honorable mention in 1989 after leading the Duhawks to a 6-4 record, which included shutout wins over Luther and Upper Iowa. 

Off the gridiron and in the track and field arena, Kult shined as a student-athlete competing in the shot put and discus. Over his four years, he was crowned an Iowa Conference Champion five times and was named the Iowa Conference Men's Track & Field MVP in his senior season. With Kult on the roster, Loras posted their best finishes in school history at the NCAA Division III Championships, finishing fourth at indoor and fifth at outdoor. Kult was one of four student-athletes to score points at the national meet. In addition, during his time at Loras, the Duhawks won the Iowa Conference Track and Field Outdoor Championships all four years.

"Brian was one of the most prolific throwers in Loras history," former head coach Bob Tucker said. "Not only was he an outstanding athlete in the shot put and discus, but he was an outstanding team leader who always led by example. Brian was a man of strong faith and was always an ethical decision maker."

"Brian was a great competitor and team leader, along with a smart and hard-nosed linebacker," former head coach Bob Bierie ('65) said of Kult. "But more importantly, he was a super person, a tremendous role model and a pleasure to coach."
