INDIANOLA, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – For the third time this season, senior
Mike Pizzello tallied the game-winning goal, this time coming on the road against Simpson College. After a scoreless first half, Pizzello finished a free kick from senior
Tom Fluegel to put the Duhawks out in front in the 52nd minute.
The Duhawks held a 17-5 shot advantage on Saturday, with 11 of the 17 being on target.
"I felt we controlled the game very well today and kept a majority of the possession in their half," head coach
Dan Rothert said. "We found a lot of our chances on balls in the air, which is exactly how Mike scored."
With the sides drawn at zeros, junior
Sam Koenig directed his free kick from midfield on frame, pinging it off the crossbar.
Zach McEntee was challenged three more times in the remaining 15 minutes, but turned all away keep his side level at zero.
In the 52nd minute, Pizzello got on the end of a free kick from Fluegel and headed it home for his ninth of the year. Entering this season, Pizzello had only tallied five times in 47 games.
"Mike was dominant for us in the air today," Rothert said. "His goal was huge because it really stifled any momentum Simpson had from being level with us at half."
Over the course of the day, Simpson tried to play the counter to their advantage, but struggled to create any real pace to the match. Loras' defense limited the Storm to just five shots in total. Sophomore
