Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Duhawk Defense Stifles Oswego State

DAYTONA, Fla. (Duhawks.com) – The Loras Men's Basketball team wrapped up their time at the "Land of Magic Classic" on Monday night, coming off a great showing against Lebanon Valley the night prior. In what would prove to be a defensive battle, Loras held their opponent to less than 50 points for the first time this season, winning 63-47. Senior Aaron Schueller led all players with 22 points, converting 8-of-13 shooting.

Following the opening tip, the sides traded baskets in rapid succession, appearing to set the scene for a high-scoring affair. Schueller drained his first three jumpers, giving Loras (5-6) an early 6-4 lead.
The Duhawks pushed their lead to seven after going on a 7-0 run with 10 minutes left in the first half. Oswego State (6-3) countered with a run of their own evening up the score once again at 18 with under seven minutes to play in the half.

Loras closed the half on a 7-3 run spanning the final 6:33 of the half, giving the Duhawks a 27-21 advantage after 20 minutes of play.

The defensive presence increased for both sides in the second half as Loras held Oswego State to six points over the opening ten minutes. In the process, the Duhawks extended their lead, going on a 21-6 run to make it 48-27 with 10:46 to play.

Facing a similar defense to that of Lebanon Valley, a 2-3 zone, the Duhawks were comfortable and able to cut through and move the ball efficiently to the open teammate and attack the basket.

Senior Nathaniel Smith, appearing in just his second game since the season opener, finished with six assists, which was matched by Harmening. On the night, Loras finished with 18 assists on 24 baskets.

The Lakers mounted a comeback over the final 10 minutes, finishing the game on a 19-11 run, but it was too little too late, as Loras held on to win 63-47.

Quotable
Mirko Grcic, junior forward

"Coming in the game we really wanted to challenge ourselves to guard the ball and their offense for a full 40 minutes. We are a very talented offensive team, but the more we emphasize and execute on the defensive end, the more success we will have in the future."

What's Next?
The Duhawks return home to the Athletic & Wellness Center to begin Iowa Conference play as they will host Buena Vista University on January 7. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
