Duhawks Fall in Season Finale

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The 2014 regular season for the women's tennis program came to an end on Tuesday night, as three seniors were honored for their dedication and commitment to the program over the last four years. Unfortunately for Loras, they were unable to send their seniors out with a win, falling to Central 7-2.

In what has been the achilles' heal of Loras' squad this year, the doubles tandems got off to a fast start on Tuesday night. At No. 1 doubles, the Dickhut sisters powered through and grabbed the 8-5 victory over Angie Allgood and Megan Davis. Freshman Kylie DeWees and Sam Pietruszynski kept the train rolling at No. 2 doubles, defeating Morgan Ernst and Ashlyn Huegel 8-4.

At No. 3 doubles, senior Caroline Rainey and sophomore Maggie Clements were pushed to their limits, eventually falling 9-8 (10-8). At one point, Rainey and Clements led 7-5, but couldn't quite close out Jordan Langer and Jessie Ryals. The Dutch duo mounted their comeback and powered through the tie-breaker to win 10-8.

Entering singles play with the 2-1 match lead, Loras was hoping to build off their early advantage to end the regular season on a high note. Unfortunately for the Duhawks, Central rebounded from their slow start and swept in singles play.

At No. 3 singles, DeWees played her heart out, but just didn't have enough to come out ahead, falling 7-5, 6-1.

"I thought that first set Kylie had tonight was the best she's played all season," head coach Karl Stubben said.

At No. 5 singles, sophomore Carrie Crabill fell 6-0, 6-0, but many of her sets went to deuce, resulting in a frustrating night on the courts.

With the regular season complete, Loras now turns their attention to the Iowa Conference Championships, which are being held in Pella, Iowa, on the campus of Central College.
