DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The 14th-ranked Loras men's soccer team wasted no time on senior night jumping out to a lead in front of their home crowd and kept the offense rolling to the tune of a 5-1 win over Luther. Senior
Jorge Simon recorded a brace and added an assist in the effort.
Luther (8-4-3, 3-1-1) entered Saturday's game with strong motivation on their side coming off a 3-nil shutout of University of Dubuque last Wednesday. That momentum was taken out of their sails in the second minute of regulation when Simon capitalized on a free kick opportunity from a very dangerous location. The early strike gave the Duhawks all the momentum shift they needed moving forward.
Joining Simon on the scoresheet in the first half were two seniors,
Bryan Irwin and
Mike Gordon.
With sophomore
Spencer Moore deep in the corner, he sent his cross over the head of senior
Richard Lenke and found Irwin right in front of goal. Off the half volley, Irwin blasted home the eventual game-winner for his second of the season.
Irwin recorded his name to the scoresheet once again, this time minutes later after a ball into Gordon laid the groundwork for his fifth of the season.
Loras carried his three-goal lead into the second half, dominating nearly every aspect of the game. The second half was no different for the Duhawks, who utilized their defensive strength to overpower Luther's attack. Luther managed just nine total shots in the contest with six coming in the second half.
Following a corner kick, Simon's header was cleared to the top of the 18, but Moore was in perfect position to hit the half-volley, beating Luther goalkeeper Tommy Breen in the process.
Luther broke up the clean sheet bid in the 76th minute when Nigel Nielsen scored a penalty kick goal, tucking his shot just inside of the post.
