DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Duhawks look for revenge against Benedictine University, who handed them a 3-0 sweep on January 21. Loras is still in search of their first win, but their play against No. 6 Carthage suggests that the team is right on the cusp of a victory.
ABOUT BENEDICTINE ...The Eagles have fallen on hard times in their first year as a program as they are currently on a six-game losing streak. These two teams met in non-conference play on January 21, with Benedictine earning the 3-0 sweep.
Benedictine is led by Sterling Glover who is currently averaging 2.87 kills per set. Eric Tarnow, an outside hitter, joins Glover as the other member of the Eagles roster who averages more than two kills per set at 2.43.
On defense, Zach Loeding will be a force that Loras will have to find a way to deal with. Entering Wednesday's contest, Loeding is averaging 1.06 blocks per set and 33 on the year.
BUILDING A PROGRAM …While the Duhawks are still looking for their first win, standing at 0-5, the team is able to look at the big picture and what they have accomplished. The lure of being a part of history and starting a new program drew many of the team's players in and the selling point is still working for Coach Thornburg as he currently has seven future Duhawks committed for the 2016 season.
KREISER STEPPING UP …With 12 freshman on the Duhawk roster, senior
Michael Kreiser has evolved into a leader during his time with the Duhawks. The transfer from Clarke University leads the team in 57 kills, averaging 2.48 kills per set. The Roselle, Ill native also has 55 digs on the season, only second to libero
Blair Anderson (61). Head coach Thornburg has been impressed with Kreiser's on and off the court performance adding, "Michael has never had to be a leader before but he's starting to realize that his voice and his opinion matter and it taking a lot of the pressure off of the other guys."
FRESHMAN DUO TAKE ON SETTING ROLES ...In their last 6 games, freshmen
Danny Krasich and
Shayne Marquez have spilt their setting duties as part of the Duahwks' 6-2 rotation. Krasich, an Oak Lawn, Illinois product has led the Duhawks with 102 assists on the year averaging 4.43 a set. His teammate and Las Vegas native, Marquez is not far behind averaging 3.32 assists per set and 74 assists on the year. Head coach Thornburg commends the pair, adding that typically a setter role is reserved for an upperclassman on most teams, but Krasich and Marquez have embraced the role and are playing smart and confident while commanding their front rows.
BROTHER VS. BROTHER ...Tonight's game will be a family reunion for Duhawk freshman setter
Danny Krasich. On the other side of the net will be Krasich's twin brother, Eric, a libero for the Eagles. The Krasich twins are products from Richards High School out of Oak Lawn, Ill where the duo combined for four all-conference selections. The twins met previously on January 21 where Eric and The Benedictine Eagles complete a 3-0 sweep on the Duhawks. After tonight, the teams will meet again on March 11 at Benedictine.
