INDIANOLA, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – In their final game of the season, the Loras College Men's Basketball team put out a strong showing on the road. The Duhawks controlled nearly aspect of the game and cruised to an 89-71 victory over Simpson College. This was the team's first road win in conference play and their first road victory since the season opener, back on November 15 at Edgewood. Junior
Mirko Grcic was the head of the snake for the Duhawks, finishing with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Simpson jumped out to a quick lead to start the game with three straight pick and pop jump shots. Loras responded quickly, regaining the lead and never looked back. The Duhawks began to lock up the Storm on defense, jumping a lot of their set plays and forcing them deep into the shot clock. As a result, Simpson's shooting suffered and Loras hauled nearly every rebound, only allowing one offensive rebound to Simpson in opening half.
The Duhawks were efficient with their offensive possessions in the first half, converting many of Simpson's missed attempts into points of their own thanks to quick ball movement. Loras' transition ability aided in their push, resulting in easy layups and open looks from distance.
Senior
Nathaniel Smith shined, sinking four of his five 3-point attempts in the first half. Smith's 12 points led all scorers as the Duhawks took a 39-31 advantage into halftime.
Out of the halftime break, the Storm came out on the attack, making an emphasis on driving to the hoop. As a result, Simpson began to draw fouls and found themselves in the bonus with nine minutes to play in the game.
Loras never wavered, however, and made it a point to continue their strong inside presence. In the second half alone, the Duhawks outscored Simpson 24-10 in the paint, a margin that expanded to 38-22 by game's end. Junior
Mirko Grcic had a field day, shooting 11-of-14 for a game-high 23 points.
With about two minutes left in the game, nursing a ten-point lead, Loras' seniors took the court for their final stanza. After a minute of play, the seniors departed, leaving behind them their careers as Duhawks.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, Loras had extended their lead to 18, defeating Simpson 89-71.
