Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Duhawks Overhauled by Raiders in MCVL Action

MILWAUKEE (Duhawks.com) - Less than 24 hours after their heartbreaking loss to Lakeland, the Loras Men's Volleyball team continued their MCVL schedule against MSOE on Sunday. Facing a highly aggressive and potent offense, the Duhawks were taken out of their zone, falling in three sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-20).

Out of the gates, Loras (3-18, 1-11 MCVL) struggled to find their rhythm both offensively and defensively. MSOE on the other hand came out firing on all cylinders, swinging away from the middle and the outside with ease.

Loras' defense was slow to adjust to the Raiders' attack, leaving open lanes MSOE (15-10, 6-5 MCVL) to power away kills through.  Head coach Jeremy Thornburg attempted to quell the rally on two separate occasions with timeouts, but the Raiders offense proved to be too strong as MSOE took Set 1 25-15.

The Duhawks opened Set 2 in better fashion, trading points with MSOE through the early goings. After being tied at 8-8, the Raiders rattled off six unanswered points to take a 14-8 lead.

MSOE's surge continued thanks largely in part to Nick Manning's ability to swing away at will and put balls away. Manning finished with 18 kills and a .727 attack percentage.

Loras' setters struggled to find consistency, which plagued the Duhawk offense in finding rhythm.

Set 2 came to a close on a 10-3 run to give MSOE the win 25-12.

With two sets gone, Loras' offense began to shake off the dust in set three running out to a 11-10 lead midway through the third set.

Not wanting the set to get away from them, MSOE bounced out of their funk to go on a 11-5 run and take solid control of the set before finishing it off to win 25-20.

Game Changer
After last night's heartbreaking loss to Lakeland, Loras had a difficult time getting their offense going which allowed MSOE to take control from the first serve

Key Stat
MSOE hit .528 as a team with five players registering a .500 attack percentage or better … Nick Manning led the way with 18 kills for the Raiders

Notables
  • Dylan Ross nearly matched a season-high in kills with eight … His previous best came against Lindenwood-Belleville on January 29 (10)
  • Jimmy Combs recorded a block for the fifth consecutive game … This season, Combs has recorded a block in 19 of 21 games

Quotable
Jeremy Thornburg, head coach

"Today was tough for us, there's no doubt about that. We never found a rhythm as a team and I think as a group, we put everything we had into last night's match and we haven't found a way to bring the same level of intensity on back to back days. We didn't start playing like ourselves until the third set and by that point it was too little to late. Now we have to go back to the drawing board and find a way to compete in our final two matches of the year."

Up Next
Loras turns their attention to Dominican, who they will face on the road next Friday in River Forest. The Stars sit in third place in the MCVL with a 12-10 overall record and 7-4 mark in league play
