DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Playing in their last home contest in their inaugural season, the Loras Men's Volleball team suffered a 3-2 setback to Lakeland College on Saturday night. Freshman
TJ Esporas led Loras' attack with 15 kills, but it wasn't enough to combat the multiple attack front from the Muskies.
Prior to first serve, the Duhawks honored their two seniors,
Tyler Beauchamp and
Michael Kreiser. Both in their own unique way, have been instrumental to the team's development in its first season.
A sluggish start put Loras behind the eight-ball early on in the contest. Leading 10-6, Lakeland went on an 8-4 run to make it 18-10, at which point they closed in for the win, 25-15.
The Duhawks responded in assertive fashion in set two, opening on a 6-1 run. Numerous attacking opportunities for Lakeland went for errors, resulting in Loras steadily building momentum over the course of the set. the Duhawk blocking wall was resilient, repeatedly turning away Muskie attacks.
A Lakeland timeout late in the set did little to quell Loras' momentum as they finished out set two to the tune of a 25-17 win, thanks to a kill from Esporas.
Pin-point serving from freshman
Shayne Marquez was the catalyst for the Duhawks to begin set three, as Loras ran out to a 5-0 lead. Reeling off their set two win, the Duhawks' momentum continued to grow as the third set went on.
No matter what Lakeland attempted to do, Loras appeared to be routinely one step ahead. Late in the set, the attacking blows swayed back and forth, ending with a kill once again from Esporas to give his team a 2-1 lead in the match.
Refusing to go down without a fight, Lakeland jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set three, prompting a timeout by the Duhawks.
Even after the timeout, Loras found difficulty in reading Lakeland's attack, resulting in gaps in the defense and kill opportunities, which the Muskies converted on most occasions.
Lakeland held on to that early lead the rest of the way, with the Duhawks coming as close as two points half way through the set, but it wasn't enough to swing the momentum into their favor. The Muskie hitters started swinging away at will, pounding out kill after kill en route to a 25-19 set four victory.
The Muskies' momentum carried over into set five where they were overly efficient once again with their attack and closed out Loras for the five-set win.
With the loss, Loras drops to 1-10 in MCVL play ahead of Sunday's matchup with MSOE. First serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
