Softball Game Notes • Buena Vista

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - After a five day break, the Loras College Softball team returns to the diamond on Wednesday with a midweek Iowa Conference tilt with the Beavers of Buena Vista. Making the trip out to Storm Lake, Iowa, the Duhawks will have an opportunity to even their conferencer record at three and build upon a 10-2 overhaul of University of Dubuque last week.

TAKING ON THE BEAVERS ...
With a trek across the state, the Duhawks will have the opportunity to level their record in Iowa Conference play when they tackle the Beavers of Buena Vista on Wednesday. Loras dropped the doubleheader a season ago, falling 6-4 and 7-6 but backed by young talent, this season's squad has their eyes on a sweep. The Duhawks will have to jump on the pitching of the Beavers early and keep ahold of their leads to come away with a pair of wins.

DUHAWKS CELEBRATE DIII WEEK ...
Since 1986, Loras has been a proud member of the NCAA and Division III, the largest division at over 444 institutions and 185,000 student-athletes. The college experience is a time of learning and growth - a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. For each day of Division III Week, Loras College Athletics will showcase its very finest student-athletes, coaches, and alumni through written posts as well as video interviews.

RIVALS COME TOGETHER TO STRIKEOUT CANCER ...
Loras and University of Dubuque joined forces last week, taking part in their fourth annual Strikeout Cancer game. Working together to raise awareness, the crosstown rivals raised over $1,600 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

WOLVERTON SHARES SPECIAL MOMENT ON THE MOUND ...
A special part of the Strikeout Cancer games the Duhawks share with University of Dubuque are the ceremonial first pitches thrown out prior to each of the games. As the host, the Spartans tabbed long-time maintenance man, Randall Meyer. In game two, freshman Regan Wolverton walked her grandmother Dottie Wolverton to the mound. Dottie Wolverton turned Regan Wolverton onto softball, often playing softball together. A 14 year breast cancer survivor, Dottie Wolverton, tossed a strike to senior catcher Nora Zerante, wrapping up the pre-game ceremony.

LORAS SPLITS WITH SPARTANS ...
Striking first with a six-run second, the early lead slipped away from the Duhawks as they dropped game one despite a strong comeback charge. In game two, the Spartans tacked on one early but Loras used a seven-run second inning to roll over the Spartans, 10-2. Junior Makaila Haase earned the win on the mound while continuing her impressive run in the batter's box. Haase joined freshman Bria Lenten with home runs on the day.
