Loras Sends Five to NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Five members of the Loras Track and Field program have qualified for the 2015 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Sophomore Elizabeth Brandenburg, senior Josh Goerdt, junior Zach Frey, senior Zac Gassman, and sophomore Brandon Gradoville will all compete in the meet which runs May 21-23 at Merrick-Pinkard Track and Field Complex on the campus of St. Lawrence University.

After qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships, Brandenburg assembled a profound outdoor season which saw her break Loras records along the way. The Naperville, Illinois native will be competing in the pole vault and 100m hurdles this weekend after winning both events at the 2015 Iowa Conference Championships. At the Spartan Twilight on May 1, Brandenburg broke the Loras all-time record in the pole vault with her mark of 3.76m.

The men's qualifiers begin with Goerdt, who will make this third appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. After missing last season due to injury, Goerdt returned to the track in dominating fashion in 2015. At the 2015 Iowa Conference Championships, Goerdt was named Track MVP after helping the Duhawks to a sweep of the sprints with his win in the 400. In addition to running the 400, Goerdt is also expected to anchor the 4x400 relay.

In now his junior season, Frey earned his place at the outdoor championships after finishing sixth a season ago. The Cascade, Iowa native has continued his top performances in 2015, winning the 800 at the Iowa Conference Championships as well as contributing to the 4x400 relay. Frey is expected to run third in the 4x400 relay.

Rounding out the qualifiers for Loras is Gassman and Gradoville, who are both making their first appearance at the NCAA Championships. As members of the 4x400 relay, Gradoville will be leaned on to get the Duhawks out to a strong start before handing the baton off to Gassman for the second leg. At the Iowa Conference Championships, Gradoville and Gassman combined to run a 1:36.564 split on the first two legs of the relay.
