Second Half Comeback Sinks Duhawks on Homecoming

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - Under the cloudy cover of Homecoming Saturday, the Loras football team suffered its sixth consecutive defeat to fall to 0-3 in conference play. Senior Zach Minch totaled 107 yards on the ground, which included a long of 36 yards. Sophomore quarterback Nolan Baumhover went 21-of-31 through the air for 212 yards and three touchdowns.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • The Duhawks took the opening kickoff and marched down the field, highlighted by a 65-yard touchdown strike from Baumhover to sophomore Brad Boelkow. Baumhover was perfect on the drive, completing all four of his pass attempts.
  • On their next drive, the Beavers utilized a healthy balance between the runing game and the passing game, but saw their drive stall on a 4th-and-2 from the Loras 39-yard line.
  • In the first quarter, possession was the name of the game as there were only four possessions, split evenly between the two sides.

Second Quarter
  • Tyler Stolen opened the second quarter with a 24-yard field goal to put Buena Vista on the board. Earlier this week, the senior was chosen as Iowa Conference Football Special Teams Performer of the Week.
  • With 11:25 remaining in the half, the Beavers methodically marched to the tune of their own drum and ripped off a 19-play, 90 yard drive, ending in Stolen's second field goal of the quarter. The drive eclipsed nine minutes of game time in the process, with Loras receiving the ball with 2:19 on the clock.
  • In less than two minutes, the Duhawks were back on the board, this time courtesy of a field goal from junior Mason Quigley.
  • After a short rush by Buena Vista on the ensuing drive, Loras took a 10-6 lead into the locker room at half time.

Third Quarter
  • Out of the halftime break, the Beavers took their first lead of the game, thanks to Cole Miller's precision passing. Miller capped the drive with a nine-yard touchdown to Charlie Fickinger.
  • The Duhawks responded immediately as Baumhover led the team down the field on a seven-play, 65-yard drive, highlighted by a 32-yard touchdown pass to Boelkow.
  • After forcing Buena Vista to punt on their next drive, it looked as though Loras was ready to run away with the game, quite literally. Minch opened the next drive with a 36-yard run to take the Duhawks into enemy territory. On the very next play, Baumhover flipped the ball back to Minch for a halfback pass, but the Beavers' Gary Weaver caught Minch on the blind side and forced a fumble, that was recovered by Buena Vista.
  • In one instance, the entire momentum shifted as the Beavers capitalized on the turnover and regained the lead on the next play as Miller hooked up with Flickinger again, this time for a 62-yard strike.
  • With under two minutes to play in the quarter, Buena Vista tacked on an insurance score on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Miller to TJ Lint, which increased the lead for the Beavers to 27-17.

Fourth Quarter
  • After Loras punted to open the fourth quarter, the Beavers struck once again for a touchdown, this time on a 75-yard drive.
  • With time winding down and so too their hopes of a comeback, the Duhawks refused to quit, scoring a late touchdown with 2:39 left. Senior Jon Powers caught all four passes that were thrown to him on the drive, finishing with a 11-yard reception for the touchdown.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Brad Boelkow |
The sophomore continued his stellar season as one of Baumhover's primary targets, hauling in 10 catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Boelkow leads all Duhawk receivers with 460 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
