DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's soccer team (11-3-2, 6-0-2 IIAC) claimed their 10th conference championship with a 1-1 draw to Luther. Melisse Chasse gave Luther the lead off a corner kick in the 28th minute which the Norse took into the halftime break. In the second half, sophomore
Elizabeth Mills found the equalizer in the 60th minute. Despite numerous chances from both sides, neither team could find the winner, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Half
- Luther jumped on Loras early creating three shots in the first 10 minutes of play.Â
- A ball fell to Hanna Christopher in the second minute of play at the corner of the box that she one-timed far post and wide.Â
- Loras' first shot came in the 12th minute when junior Gretchen Schutz had the ball at the top of the box and struck a shot wide of the far post.Â
- Junior Maura Walsh in the 18th minute strikes a shot on goal that is right at the keeper.Â
- A minute later, junior Lauren Bolnius crossed a ball to the near post that Schutz got her head on and Lauren Thormodsgard deflected it out behind the end line for a Loras corner.Â
- Hanna Christopher nearly gave Luther the lead when she delivered a shot on goal that senior Maria Siebels saved.Â
- In the 28th minute, Melisse Chasse from Luther took a corner for the Norse. Her service bent inside the far post to give Luther the 1-0 lead.Â
- Luther possessed the ball deep into the Loras attacking third getting a shot off that was blocked in front of goal. With Siebels on the ground after the initial attempt, Marta Springer put the rebound wide of goal.
Second HalfÂ
- In the 51st minute, Madison Speer hit a shot on net off a free kick that a diving Siebels saved to keep the deficit at one.Â
- The Duhawks earned a corner in the 54th minute and put three shots on goal with the last one being corralled by Lauren Thormodsgard.Â
- In the 60th minute, senior Madie Avery played a ball over the top that Mills and Thormodsgard challenged for in the Norse attacking third. Mills won the loose ball and put her shot into the open net to level the game at one.Â
First Overtime
- The Norse nearly ended the match in the first minute of overtime when McKenzie Lundquist was unmarked in the box and struck a shot far post that an outstretched Siebels deflected to keep her team alive.Â
- In the 98th minute, Luther had another great scoring chance when Ellie Bunz was all alone on the doorstep between her and Siebels, but her bid went high over the cross bar.Â
Second Overtime
- Ellie Bunz tested Siebels again in the 105th minute, but had her attempt at goal denied.
- Loras earned a corner kick in the 107th minute with junior Maura Walsh getting her head on it, but her shot was saved by Thormodsgard.Â

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYERS OF THE GAMEÂ
Maria Siebels I The St. Peter, Minn. native came up big for her team tonight to preserve partial of the IIAC Regular Season Championship. The senior recorded seven saves in the match with many of them coming in key moments to keep her team alive.
Lauren Bolnius | From the opening whistle, Bolnius used her speed in the attacking third to create early chances, forcing a defensive adjustment from Luther. Both of her shots were on target, forcing saves from the Norse's Lauren Thormodsgard.

With the draw, Loras has earned the No. 1 seed in the IIAC Tournament and will face the winner of the No. 4 seeded Wartburg and No. 5 seeded Coe. The first round games will be played on Saturday. The semifinal is set to be played on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
