Men's Basketball Edged by Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's basketball team dropped its first conference game of the season on Saturday at Dubuque, 96-78. Senior Christian Mathis led the way for the Duhawks offensively with 18 points. Mathis was 7-of-12 from the field and 1-of-2 from downtown.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED 
First Half 
  • From the get-go, emotions were running high between the two sides with the crowd adding a lot of energy.
  • Senior Christian Mathis kept Loras within reach in the first five minutes, scoring the Duhawks' first seven points. The Chicago native kept his rhythm and led Loras at half with 13 points. 
  • Dubuque led the game for the first nine minutes until Loras took their first lead of the game thanks to a 3-pointer from freshman Matt Dacy-Seijo at the 11:01 mark, giving the Duhawks a 20-19 advantage.
  • Both sides jostled for position on the scoreboard, but eventually the Spartans took control and opened an 11-point spread at the end of the half.

Second Half 
  • Dubuque started the second half in similar fashion to how the first half ended, quickly scoring nine of the first 13 points, prompting a timeout from Loras Head Coach Chris Martin
  • The Spartans refused to relinquish its grip on the game, matching nearly every Duhawk basket with one of their own. 
  • Sophomore Demond George scored 11 of his 14 points and finished the game 3-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Mathis kept Loras within reach early in the game and was a main scoring option all night. He finished the game with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

UP NEXT 
The Duhawks continue conference play next Wednesday as they host Buena Vista. The Beavers (3-2, 1-1) dropped their first IIAC clash of the season on Saturday to Nebraska Wesleyan, 88-82. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
