ALL-TIME SERIES RECORD AGAINST WARTBURGWartburg leads the all-time series 52-51, having won six of the past nine meetings between the two sides. This series dates back to the 1919-1920 season in which Loras was victorious, 32-17.
LAST TIME AGAINST WARTBURGLoras up-ended the Knights by a final score of 84-75 when the sides met on Lillis Court earlier this season. The Duhawks were led by an outstanding effort from both
Justin VanWambeke and
Mirko Grcic, who combined for 49 of the teams' points. As a team, Loras shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on 26 attempts. Defensively, Loras held Jordan Cannon to three points in 25 minutes of play.
SCOUTING THE KNIGHTSWartburg enters Wednesday's contest with a record of 12-9, 5-5. Offensively, the Knights are led by Jordan Cannon, a first team all-Iowa Conference selection last season. This season, Cannon already has one player of the week honor under his name, while averaging 15.6 points per game on 50.2 percent shooting. Cannon knows how to pick his shots, but struggles at the free-throw line, shooting 58.1 percent. The Knights have labored in the post this season, getting bested out by forwards such as Kennedy Drey of Buena Vista and Colby Taylor of Central. This bodes well for
Mirko Grcic, who ranks fifth in the IIAC in scoring at 17.0 points per game. One of Wartburg's strengths this season is their aggressiveness on defense, which has resulted in an average of 7.9 steals per game, which ranks second in the conference.
ALL-TIME SERIES RECORD AGAINST BUENA VISTABuena Vista holds a 46-40 advantage over the Duhawks in their 95 years of competition, dating back to the 1920-1921 season. In that contest, the Duhawks came away on top by a final score of 48-14.
LAST TIME AGAINST BUENA VISTALoras dropped the Beavers in their last meeting, 82-76. Grcic and VanWambeke combined to score 47 points, while the team as a whole shot 50 percent from the floor on 58 attempts. Buena Vista's Kennedy Drey managed to score 23 points, but Loras held the Beavers' leading scorer, Nick Clark, to 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Sean Morgan was limited to four shot attempts and six points, far less than his season average.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERSAs a team, the Beavers have taken a step back from where they were a season ago, entering Saturday's contest with a record of 8-13 and 3-7 in the IIAC. This season, Buena Vista has been led by senior guard Nick Clark and junior forward Kennedy Drey, who returned after being named All-Conference a yeag ago. Clark leads the team in points and assists per game, averaging 19.9 points and 5.9 assists. Buena Vista's breakout performer this season has been Sean Morgan, who came into the season averaging 7.2 minutes per game last season. In his junior campaign, Morgan has started in all 21 games for Buena Vista averaging 11.7 points per game on a stellar 66.7 percent shooting, a mark which leads the Iowa Conference.
TIMP EARNS STRIPES FROM THE LINEThe Dubuque native has taken charge from the charity stripe this season. As a freshman, Timp has earned his stripes from the line, shooting a team best 86.2 percent from the floor. Timp has recorded 85 points on the season thus far, averaging 5.7 points per game. In 7 of Loras' 11 wins this season, Timp has made at least one free throw.
COUNTING ON GEORGE LATEFreshman
Demond George has shown glimpses of what he can be in the next few seasons for Loras through the energy he provides off the bench. The Naperville, Ill. native has come on late, performing at a more consistent level each week. Over the past two games George has shot over 40 percent from the field and finished each contest having scored in double-figures. Against Dubuque, George recorded a season-high five steals by sticking his nose into passing lanes in the waning moments.
SCHNEIDER SHOWCASES SMOOTH DEFENSESenior
Justin Schneider, known to Duhawk basketball fans as "Big Smooth", has been rock solid on the defensive end this season. Schneider leads the Duhawks with 22 blocks on the season, averaging 1.0 block per game, placing him third in the Iowa Conference. As a team, the Duhawks average the second most blocks per game in the conference, at 3.0 per game.
IOWA CONFERENCE ACTION: WEEK 5 RECAPLoras split in Iowa Conference action last week, defeating Coe before falling victim to University of Dubuque on Saturday. Against the Kohawks, Loras shot 50 percent from the field en route to a 90-82 victory.
Justin VanWambeke led the team in scoring with 29 points against the conference's last place team. Grcic followed in strong fashion, adding 20 points and nine rebounds against Coe. Saturday told a difference story, with the Duhawks falling by a final score of 77-62. Three Duhawks scored in double-figures, but VanWambeke led the team with 12, his third lowest output of the year.
DUHAWKS FIND SUCCESS ON DEFENSIVE GLASSThis season Loras finds themselves ranked 35th nationally in defensive rebounds with 29.3 per game. The nations leader, Benedictine (Ill.) boasts a mark of 33.0 per game. Loras boasts three of the conferences top-15 defensive rebounders in
