Duhawks Defeat Bulldogs to Earn Third MCVL Victory

ADRIAN, Mich. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's volleyball team swept Adrian in MCVL play on Friday night, the first of five matches in six days for the Duhawks on their spring break trip. Freshmen Ryan Galvan and Jeffrey Budz led the Loras attack posting five kills a piece while sophomore setter Shayne Marquez posted 15 assists and six service aces.

POST GAME NOTES
  • The Duhawks got off to a fast start, taking a 6-2 lead after service aces from freshman Greg Kinney and sophomore Danny Krasich.
  • Loras continued to expand its lead in set one with Krasich at the service line, ripping off four straight points, which forced an Adrian timeout with the score 10-2 in Loras' favor.
  • The Duhawks continued to increase their advantage when a kill from sophomore Jimmy Combs made the score 17-5.
  • In a mostly one-sided set one, Loras finished off the frame with a kill from freshman Austin Kuchenbecker to the tune of 25-11.
  • Freshman Jeffrey Budz recorded his first two kills of 2016 in frame number one.
  • Sophomore Shayne Marquez led Loras to another fast start in set two, slotting three service aces en route to an early 6-0 advantage.
  • The Duhawks extended this lead further after a kill from junior Paul Kraus gave them a 10-3 lead.
  • With the early advantage, Loras cruised to victory in set two as a kill from Budz put the bow on the second frame, which ended 25-7 in favor of the Duhawks.
  • Marquez recorded all six of his service aces in set two alone.
  • Having established a 2-0 lead in the match, Loras traded points with the Bulldogs at the beginning of set three.
  • With the score 6-5 in the Duhawks favor, a block from sophomore Dawid Kasprzak and Galvan helped open Loras' first extended lead of the frame.
  • A kill from Kasprzak made the score 10-6, prompting a timeout from Adrian.
  • After the break in the action, Loras continued to build its lead as a kill from junior Paul Kraus made the score 14-9, forcing the second Bulldog timeout of the set.
  • Sophomore Kyle Zacok got in on the action with an ace of his own to make the score 17-9 in the Duhawks' favor.
  • Adrian refused to go quietly, fighting back and forth with Loras, but a double block from Galvan and freshman Nadir Morgan gave the Duhawks a 21-13 lead.
  • Freshman Anthony Delgado recorded his first assist of 2016 on a kill from fellow freshman Eric Zirzow to bring matters to match point at 24-14.
  • An attacking error from the Bulldogs put the cap on set three, 25-14, and the Duhawks third MCVL victory, by a set score of 3-0.
  • Loras improves to 8-12 and 3-7 in the MCVL while Adrian falls to 0-17 and 0-11 in conference play.
  • Marquez' six service aces ranks second all-time in program history.
