Softball Splits on First Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras softball team opened its spring break trip in Florida with a 4-3 win over Allegheny that featured a grand slam by senior Makaila Haase. Day one ended with an 10-5 loss to Western Connecticut State despite two-hit days from junior Dani Stromert and sophomore Regan Wolverton.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Allegheny opened scoring in the top of the first inning as Taylor Massart singled through the left side, scoring Alexis Ryan.
  • The Gators kept the Loras bats quiet in the first half of the game, keeping the Duhawks hitless through the first two innings.
  • Allegheny added to their lead in the top of the third after Ryan singled and later stole second. A double to left field from Massart brought Ryan around to score for the second time in the ball game.
  • Senior Julie Kistner singled up the middle for Loras' first hit, but was stranded on second after a fly out and ground out.
  • The Duhawks' slow start in the beginning gave way to a thrilling sixth inning.
  • Stromert's single to left center started the rally, followed by a Allegheny fielding error and a fielder's choice. With runners on first and second, freshman Hannah Towns grounded into a fielder's choice, but freshman Nicole Majewski beat the throw, loading the bases.
  • After watching the first two pitches miss the strike zone, Haase took the next offering from Arison over the left field fence for the grand slam, putting the Duhawks out in front.
  • Another run by Allegheny in the top of the seventh wasn't enough to surpass Loras as the Duhawks took the game, 4-3.
  • On the mound, sophomore Emma Corkill pitched the final three innings of the game, inducing eight ground ball outs and allowing one earned run.
  • Loras carried their offensive momentum over into game two jumping on Western Connecticut State with two runs on one swing of the bat by sophomore Bria Lenten.
  • The Duhawks kept their bats swinging in the second inning as a two-RBI double from Stromert put Loras up 4-0.
  • Senior Julie Kistner scored what proved to be the final run for Loras as Western Connecticut dominated the final innings.
  • The Colonials soon tied the game with two runs in the second inning and three in the third.
  • Five hits in the fourth allowed Western Connecticut to take a 9-5 lead.
  • The Colonials' Alle Sabith was in total control on the mound after the rough start, holding Loras to two hits over the final five innings, while finishing with eight strikeouts.
