Duhawks Split Twin Bill with Terriers

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (Duhawks.com) - Nearing the end of its spring trip, the Loras baseball team split Wednesday's doubleheader against Thomas. Senior Patrick Walsh threw seven innings of shutout ball in game two to earn his first win of the season.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Thomas got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, striking for three runs on four hits.
  • After a quiet first inning for themselves, Loras responded in a big way in the second.
  • Junior Tony Heiser ripped a one-out double down the right field line to start the rally, followed by back-to-back singles from juniors Luke Leibforth and Thomas Johnson.
  • Leading 5-3, the Duhawks ripped off three more runs on four singles, two of which stayed in the infield.
  • The Terriers responded in a big way, exploding for 11 runs on nine hits in the fourth inning to take a commanding 14-8 lead.
  • Loras made a small dent into the deficit, pushing across a run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single from senior Patrick Walsh.
  • Thomas tacked on one more run to secure the six-run advantage, taking game one of the doubleheader, 15-9.
  • Game two featured Walsh and his first start in nearly 11 months.
  • The senior showed no signs of rust, striking out three batters in the first two innings.
  • Both teams were scoreless through the first three innings before the Duhawks opened the scoring with a pair of runs in teh fourth, both coming on a throwing error by the Terrior second basemen.
  • With the lead now in hand, Walsh continued to grow stronger on the mound, having full control of his fastball, curveball and slider.
  • Walsh helped his own case with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring freshman Danny Paluch.
  • For insurance purposes, Loras tacked on three more runs in the sixth, all without a base hit, benefiting from a pair of throwing errors by Thomas.
