Larson's Grand Slam Powers Duhawks to Split with UWP

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The Loras softball team faced the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the team's home-opener on Wednesday, splitting with the Pioneers, dropping game one 9-0 and winning game two 12-7. After being shutout in game one, the Duhawks rallied to score 12 runs in game two, all of which came with a two-outs situation. Freshman Megan Larson put Loras in front for good in game two, blasting a pinch-hit grand slam to put the Duhawks in front.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pioneers got to senior Makaila Haase right from the opening pitch, working deep counts and taking advantage of three walks, combining for six runs with three hits.
  • The Duhawks struggled on offense, recording three hits the entire game, making it difficult to close the gap.
  • UW-Platteville never wavered on their lead and increased it the top of the fifth adding three more runs.
  • With the 9-0 deficit, the Duhawks fell to the Pioneers after five innings.
  • UW-Platteville kept swinging as they were first game and got on the board in the top of the first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead.
  • This time, the Duhawks found a response in their half of the inning.
  • Sophomore Bria Lenten smashed the 3–2 pitch home run over the fence for her second four-bagger of the season, tying the game at 1-all.
  • UW-Platteville's Taylor Brown singled through the left side in the second inning put the Pioneers back in front, 2-1.
  • Three more runs came across to score in the frame, extending UW-Platteville's lead to 5–1.
  • Sophomore Tara Shingler was replaced in the second inning in favor of Corkill, who had already made a relief appearance in game one.
  • The change proved to be a good move for Loras, as Corkill proceeded to end the inning with consecutive strikeouts.
  • The Duhawks transferred this momentum to the plate in their half of the second, scoring four runs to tie the game at 5-all thanks to an untimely fielding error by the Pioneers. Loras reeled off all four runs with two outs after the error.
  • After junior Cate Paulsen reached on the error, freshman Nicole Majewski dropped a bunt down the third base line, putting runners at first and second.
  • A single by junior Dani Stromert brought Paulsen around from second. She later came around to score herself on a single up the middle by freshman Shannon Coyle.
  • The rally continued after a second fielding error by UW-Platteville allowed sophomore Bria Lenten to reach, which scored Coyle from first.
  • Corkill retired the first two batters in the top of the third before a Loras fielding error placed a runner on base. A two-out double to the right field corner by the Pioneers' Keeley Schultz looked as if UW-Platteville would jump back in front, but a relay throw executed to perfection from Majewski to senior Julie Kistner to Paulsen at the plate gunned out the runner trying to score.
  • Loras was unable to capitalize off the defensive momentum in their half of the third.
  • The Pioneers struck for two more runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run homer by Brooke Posey, 7–5.
  • In the fifth inning, the first two Duhawks were retired in order before a two-out rally commenced once again.
  • Sophomore Regan Wolverton singled up the middle before back-to-back walks loaded the bases.
  • A substitution from head coach Ashley Winter brought Larson to the plate and the freshman sent the first pitch she saw deep over the center field fence for a grand slam to take the 9-7 lead.
  • The rally continued for Loras as Lenten smashed a single to right field, scoring two more runs. When the dust settled, the Duhawks found themselves in from 11–7.
  • Loras tacked on an insurance run the next inning on a single to left by Paulsen, which scored Miranda Chapman from third.
  • Larson extended her hitting streak to eight games, thanks to her home run in game two.
  • With home runs from Lenten and Larson, the Duhawks raised their season dinger total to 10.
  • Ten of Loras' 12 runs on Wednesday came with two outs, bringing their season total to 46, which ranks second in the Iowa Conference.
