Miller and Powers Shatter School Records at Last Chance Meet

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - In an attempt to qualify for the 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships, freshman Audrey Miller and senior Bree Powers broke school records in the 5k and the 200m on Saturday at the UW-Stevens Point Last Chance Meet.

Miller, who broke onto the scene for the Duhawks during the cross country season in the fall earning All-Region honors, became the new school record holder in the 5k. Her time of 17:27.20 was nearly four seconds faster than the previous school record set by Jenny Richey at the 1998 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Last week, at the Iowa Conference Championships, Miller won the 5k while under the weather with her time of 19:36.81. Before Saturday, her previous best time of 17:52.79 was set at the UW-Platteville Invitational on Feb. 13.

Joining Miller in the record-breaking was Powers. Over the last four weeks, Powers has gone from a 26.82 time in the 200 to a 25.63 time, a difference of 1.19 seconds. Before Powers, the best time in Loras history was set by Pam Orris at the 2005 Iowa Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time 25.71.

Both Miller and Powers are in search of their first trip to nationals and will learn of their future on Sunday when the NCAA announces its official qualifiers. Senior Zach Frey and junior Elizabeth Brandenburg have already punched their ticket to nationals based on their performances earlier this season. Frey is currently ranked fifth in the 800 and will be making his fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships. Brandenburg, who qualified for indoor and outdoor last year, will be making her third trip to nationals.

The 2016 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships will be hosted by Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, with events beginning on Thursday, March 10.
