Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 2 Duhawks Upended by St. Norbert, 2-1

DULUTH, Minn. (Duhawks.com) - The second-ranked Loras men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2016 season on Sunday against St. Norbert, 2-1. Senior Jonah Jacke tallied the lone strike for the Duhawks in the 80th minute, but a pair of second half goals from the Green Knights proved to be the difference in the weekend finale.

FIRST HALF
  • Loras came out of the gates flat and succumbed some early chances from St. Norbert. The Green Knights matched the physicality from Loras and it paid off for them with early scoring chances.
  • St, Norbert created many of their opportunities in transition starting in the 11th minute, when the Green Knights pushed the ball forward and into the Loras end. Jon Gregory received the ball and struck a left-footed shot right at Peterson for the easy save.
  • The Duhawks' best chance of the first half came in the 22nd minute off a corner from junior Spencer Moore. After the ball was served into the box, it ping-ponged around until it fell to senior Kyler Olson who in one motion chested the ball down and then fired a shot on goal that was blocked.
  • The Green Knights earned a free kick inside the Loras half where it was served right into traffic. Junior Jacob Peterson came out and snatched the ball out of the air to keep both sides level at zero heading into halftime.

SECOND HALF
  • The Duhawks nearly scored the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute of play when Moore took a free kick outside the box. The Arlington Heights, Ill. native put his shot over the wall and inches away from hitting the near post.
  • Ben Prange from St. Norbert dribbled the ball down the far sideline, beat a Loras defender and played a cross off the far post. Jon Gregory ran onto it unmarked and tried heading it back on goal, but it turned into an easy save for Peterson.
  • St. Norbert earned the go-ahead goal in the match during the 55th minute off a free kick from 50 yards out. Tyler Kassube took the kick and floated a perfectly-placed strike into side netting on the far post to give his team the 1–0 lead.
  • The Green Knights created another chance in the 65th minute when they had the Loras defense out of position and Sam Lamers had the ball at the top of the box for St. Norbert. Lamers pushed the ball to his left foot, but a sliding block by senior Austin Jacobi kept the ball from reaching the net.
  • Minutes later, the Green Knights doubled their lead after a cross from the far side came into the box but Peterson's attempt to quell the scoring chance was disrupted by a flick from Sam Lamers who then found Ben Prange with a wide open goal.
  • The two-goal deficit put Loras into crisis mode, throwing numbers forward in an attempt to equalize. After multiple chances, senior Jonah Jacke received a pass from freshman Liam O'Connell 25 yards out from goal and hit a laser that beat Josh Koleske to the far post cutting the St. Norbert lead to 2–1.
  • The Duhawks kept the pressure on in the final 10 minutes in an attempt to find another tally. With time winding down, a throw-in was deflected out past the end line for a corner, but time expired before Loras could muster another scoring chance.
