Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Goal Sinks No. 12 Men's Soccer

KENOSHA, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's soccer team suffered its second straight loss Friday night at Carthage by a final score of 1–0. The lone tally came off the foot of Kevin Mahoney in the 89th minute propelling the Red Men to the win.  This loss moves the Duhawks to 3–2–0 on the year.

FIRST HALF
  • The Red Men came out with a sense of urgency and it paid off, earning their third corner 13 minutes into the match. The service came into the box and on the clearing attempt fell to the feet of Adrian Herrera who took a touch and then hit a diving shot that was right at junior Jacob Peterson
  • Carthage stayed inside Loras' end and in the 17th minute Kevin Mahoney had a scoring opportunity standing on the six-yard line. Mahoney headed his shot near post, but right at Peterson.
  • A bouncing ball was heading back towards Peterson with senior Calvin Miller shielding Zach Schoffstall from reaching the loose ball. A miscommunication between Peterson and Miller allotted Schoffstall to take a shot but it went wide far post.
  • The Duhawks best chance of the first half occurred in the 31st minute when junior Spencer Moore delivered a low-cross from the near sideline to the penalty area. Freshman Mark Histed struck a one-timer but Carthage goalkeeper Brayan Arce Justiniano was in perfect position to quell the scoring opportunity.
SECOND HALF
  • The Duahwks came out strong in the second half creating three scoring opportunities in the first five minutes. The first chance, in the 50th minute, came off a free kick from Moore who connected with freshman Liam O'Connell. The Libertyville, Ill. native flicked a shot near post that Justiniano had to dive to stop.
  • Kevin Mahoney nearly put the Red Men on the board in the 54th minute when he had the ball on the far side and dribbled towards the corner of the box hitting a shot that Peterson was able to save.
  • Loras nearly had the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute when a corner kick from Jacobi found Miller by the penalty spot. The Niles, Ill. native leaped and got his head on the ball but his shot was inches over the crossbar.
  • From that point on, each side had limited chances until the Red Men scored the game-winner in the 89th minute. Kevin Mahoney, who had been lethal the whole night, received a pass at the penalty spot and after taking a first touch, tucked his left-footed shot inside the far post.
  • Loras' last two game losing streak occurred a season ago when they dropped matches to DePauw and Division I side Western Illinois. Following the two-game skid, the Duhawks won 14 of their next 16, en route to an appearance in the National Championship match.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Prairie Wolves are 4–0–2 through their first six matches and will face Grinnell and Concordia Nebraska before hosting the Duhawks.
