Football Falls to Coe in IIAC Opener

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras football dropped its Iowa Conference opener on Saturday afternoon against Coe, 45–10. Senior Danny Willis hauled in nine passes for 126 yards, but it was the Duhawks' four turnovers that opened the floodgates for the Kohawks. With the loss, Loras falls to 0–3 while Coe improves to 3–0.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
FIRST QUARTER
  • A change in quarterback for the Duhawks saw sophomore Nolan Baumhover start under center. On Loras' first scoring drive, Baumhover connected on a 33-yard pass to senior Danny Willis to bring the Duhawks all the way down to the Coe 10-yard line. Following a pair of incomplete passes a short rush by Baumhover, Loras turned to its special teams unit and junior Mason Quigley delivered a 26-yard field goal.
  • After forcing Coe to punt on its next drive, Loras motored its way back into Kohawk territory, but an interception on a 3rd-and-6 play brought the Duhawk drive to an immediate halt.
  • Coe nearly capitalized on the mistake three plays later after rushes of 25, 12 and 32 yards. On Brandon Roseberry's 32-yard scamper, sophomore Walter Ollie stripped the ball just before the end zone and was recovered by Loras.

SECOND QUARTER
  • The Kohawks took their first lead of the day early in the second quarter as Gavin Glenn found Seth Williams for the 8-yard pass for the score.
  • On the following drive, Baumhover was sacked at the Coe 49-yard line and coughed up a fumble which was recovered by the Kohawks. Ten plays and 43 yards later, Coe's Trevor Heitland forced his way into the end zone with 7:48 left on the clock, extending the Kohawk lead to 11.
  • With 5:27 remaining in the quarter, Loras took over at their own 20. Three plays into the drive, Baumhover was picked off at the 25-yard line and took it in for the touchdown.
  • On 2nd-and-1 from the Coe 34, Baumhover found junior Mikey Castoro on the right side with a strike in the flats. Castoro powered his way to the three-yard line for a gain of 31 yards. Inside the red zone, the Duhawks struggled to break through the Kohawk defense and missed on their field goal attempt from 24 yards.

THIRD QUARTER
  • Loras caught a break after punting on its first drive of the second half when Coe's Colton Martin muffed the punt and turned it right back over to the Duhawks. Unfortunately, the drive stalled when on a 4th-and-7, Baumhover missed senior Jon Powers, turning the ball over on downs.
  • The Kohawks opened a 24-point gap on their next drive as Brandon Abbas connected from 24 yards for the field goal.

FOURTH QUARTER
  • Baumhover's third interception came early in the final frame on a 3rd-and-5 from inside the Coe 10-yard line. The sophomore gunslinger dropped back to pass and was picked off by Dylan Steepleton, who recorded his third interception of the ball game. The Kohawks turned the turnover into six points 10 plays later after marching down the field in 4:55, taking a 45–3 lead.
  • Loras' first touchdown came with 27 seconds left in the clock after a 17-yard strike from Baumhover to sophomore Brad Boelkow.
  • The Duhawks attempted to recover the onside kick but were unsuccessful and after a kneel from Coe, put an end to week three and the Iowa Conference opener.
