Loras' Upset Bid Against No. 25 Central Falls Short

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - While owning an 0-4 record wasn't what Loras had in mind at this point in the season, the Duhawk football team (0-4, 0-2 IIAC) showed the home fans on Saturday just what they are capable of in the 42-34 loss to No. 25 Central (4-0, 2-0 IIAC). Senior Zach Minch posted his third consecutive game with at least 100 rushing yards while senior Jon Powers hauled in 11 catches for 100 yards and sophomore Brad Boelkow finished with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 10 catches.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
First Quarter
  • After a 3-and-out from Loras on the first drive of the game, the Dutch marched down the field on a 13-play, 80-yard drive to take the early 7–0 lead.
  • The Duhawks responded quickly, taking the kickoff back 25 yards, which kickstarted a 14-play 74 yard drive. Sophomore Nolan Baumhover was 3-for-4 through the air, including completions of 11 and 19 yards, which help set up his one-yard sneak on the goal line for the score.
  • Central's next drive was halted after Riley Gray couldn't connect with Sam Markham on a 4th-and-5 from the Loras 31, turning the ball over on downs.

Second Quarter
  • Central regained the lead 36 seconds into the second quarter on a two-yard rush from Nate Boland.
  • Loras' next drive was executed to perfection, showing the home fans the potential that the offense has under the direction of associate head coach Jake Olsen. Baumhover distributed the ball all over the field to the tune of a 13-play drive, capped by a touchdown pass to sophomore Brad Boelkow. On the ensuing point-after-attempt, a botched snap was quickly picked up by redshirt sophomore Bob Kelly, who found senior Damon Davies in the end zone on a shovel pass to put the Duhawks ahead, 15–7.
  • After a 3-and-out, Loras' offense got right back to work and used a 17-play drive to take the 22–7 lead following a touchdown from senior Zach Minch.
  • With 41 ticks of the clock left in the half, the Duhawks started their final drive on their own 34-yard line and quickly moved the ball all the way down to the Central 19. Head coach Steve Helminiak called for his special teams unit in an attempt to add three points before the half, but junior Mason Quigley's kick missed wide right.

Third Quarter
  • Out of the break, the Dutch went to work and orchestrated a 15-play drive, but were stopped short of pay dirt after back-to-back incomplete passes. Central settled for a field goal attempt from 39 yards, but missed short, turning the ball over to Loras with 11:21 left in the quarter.
  • On their next drive, Central was facing a 3rd-and-1 when senior Mark Tilkes blew up his blocker and put his helmet right on the ball in Cory Archer's hands, forcing a fumble that was picked up by Davies.
  • Loras made quick work out of the next drive as Baumhover found Boelkow for his second touchdown on the third play of the drive. Quigley's point-after-attempt was blocked, leaving the Duhawks in front 28–21.
  • With 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, Central tied the game on a touchdown pass from Gray to Markham.

Fourth Quarter
  • Loras' first drive of the fourth quarter came to abrupt halt when Baumhover was picked off at the 19-yard line.
  • The Dutch quickly turned the interception into six points as Gray found Markham for the second time in the corner end zone to put Central back in front for the first time since the second quarter.
  • Loras was in position to tie the game once more, but a bobbled reception was corralled by Zach Matter for the Dutch, giving Central the ball with 11:08 to play in the game.
  • Much like their first interception, the Dutch took advantage of the mishap and increased their lead following an eight-play drive, highlighted by a touchdown run from Gray to increase Central's lead to 14.
  • The Duhawks got the ball back with 6:08 on the clock and marched down the field and Baumhover hooked up with senior Jon Powers on a short pass to punch it in from two-yards out. After Quigley's missed point-after-attempt, Loras found itself trailing by eight with 4:08 to play.
  • Staring at a 3rd-and-6 with time winding down, Central converted on a seven-yard rush by Kohle Helle to seal the win.

FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Brad Boelkow | The sophomore wideout hauled in 10 catches for 109 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Through four games, Boelkow has eclipsed 300 yards receiving and leads the Duhawks with four touchdown catches, averaging 12.2 yards per reception.

UP NEXT
Loras now turns its attention to next week's homecoming game against Buena Vista. The Beavers find themselves in a similar position to that of the Duhawks, entering week five of the season without a win under their belt. Kickoff from Bierie Field inside of the Rock Bowl is set for 1 p.m.
